I bid last night on a Red Pro 18mm but was outbid. Next day i got this email:

You've been given a second chance to buy 18mm Red Pro Prime Lens, which you placed a bid on for $ 2,150.00 on Apr 26, 2013 . To purchase this item, reply to this email or just contact the seller at: jrengineer70@gmail.com

The whole email is in Ebay mail layout and looks legitimate. The mail address which it was sent from is ebay@ebay.tmo909.info. Not an Ebay mail adress after all.
After agreeing on this second offer i got this mail:

Hi,

Finally managed to get to a laptop where I can check my inbox, hope it hasn't been long since you emailed. My wife and I celebrate 15 years of marriage and we're on holiday.
Long story short, the winner after speaking on the phone, waited for him all day long came up and wanted a straight swap. If that wasn't enough the bugger almost made us miss our flight.
Hopefully we can come to an agreement so I won't have to relist it, therefore I am willing to accept your last bid price $2,150.00. I've got nothing to hide, agree with and recommend for your peace of mind a proper inspection before cash changes hands. I will only proceed using the eBay Protection Program. You will get 5 days for item inspection, I do accept returns. I can't accept a direct payment through this program, all payments will be handled by eBay. Seems eBay won't release the funds to me until you confirm the item's as described. If I just knew about this ebay program from the start. There's always something new to learn.
Next week I'll return home and would like to have a buyer waiting for me. I'd appreciate if you could get back with an answer by tomorrow if you're keen to buy it. Once I receive your reply I'll just register everything with eBay.
Regards

P.S. My cell phone says no network coverage :( but I do check emails regularly.

No sender name in it however. I asked who i was dealing with i got this mail:

Hi there,

How are you? I've registered the transaction with ebay and you must have received an order confirmation. Please check your junk or spam folder because sometimes their messages may end in there and look for an email named: ''order confirmation'' . Please read it carefully, because all the info you need is in there. Let me know at your earliest convenience.

Thank you!

Then i got an email that again looked like a legitimate mail from Ebay but now with the request to make payment out of Ebay to a bank account in London:

Offourse Ebay payments never go through bank accounts in London or where ever. Only Paypal. I have post this so everyone can regonize a fraud seller. This one uses mail address: engine@engineer.find22.info and: jrengineer70@gmail.com but i am sure the have many other scam mail addresses.

This is how they work:

They watch real auctions, collect info from bidders who did not win and then sent out a second chance mail saying that the sale did not go trough and you can buy it for the higest bid you made which they know what it is. I am becoming a sort of scam regonizing expert now. unfortunately due to the fact that i felt for a scam before.

Thanks for the info. I remember getting one of these, but decided against it since i was just bidding for fun and decided i didnt want the item after all.

NEVER, EVER consider paying for "anything" bought on eBay except via PayPal. That way you are protected.

Not only that, but if it's a Red camera, INSIST that it MUST go to Red for evaluation FIRST. If, and only if, it passes, will you pay for it.

Thousands of dollars is just too much to banter about with.

Be careful !!

OK there is a BIG problem with eBay right now.

I had one of these offers myself a week or two ago. Same email addy.

He had:

- my full eBay username
- my full real name
- my correct email address
- the amount of my losing bid

NONE of this info is exposed by eBay.

It MUST be either a major hack, or (more likely in my view) an inside job.

Either way, eBay is currently seriously compromised. I've heard exactly the same story, same details, same kind of emails from address, from several other people I know. This is major; I'm surprised it hasn't been reported in mainstream press.

NO.

See my post. There's no way to get this 'info from bidders' unless you WORK for eBay, or unless you've CRACKED eBay. It's not as simple as you make it sound - which is why this is so serious.

Mike

Mike is right. Regular users wouldn't able to see bidder full information.

OP should post this to badbuyerlist.org as well.

another incident

another incident

I sold a Red One via Ebay recently and got email from someone who also got a second chance offer.

Never used eBay, and NEVER will!!

Paypal has fallen in the same category were buyers can scam sellers at will with ZERO protection to sellers... And viceversa!!

They just simply care about the Millions they make each year off of you in %%!!

Thanks... BUT... NO thanks!!

I prefer to buy and or sale only to fellow REDUSER I know of here in the forum with a credibility factor based on their participation in this Forum.

I received an email from the same guy about real estate I was not the high bidder on on ebay.
The details looked very real, and in the real ebay format. The best way to check is to go to the ebay website and check purchase history/messages. This guys messages do not appear there. Even the help button on his emails goes to a scam helpdesk where he probably reassures you about the whole thing.
I talked to the seller of the item, and he said several people had been scammed.
Always deal through the ebay website and use paypal, dont wire transfer to a random account!

I've been getting similar emails for an item I'm currently selling on eBay as well. At first glance it looked legit, but I got suspicious when the shipping address was in Nigeria (but seller is from the UK) and the message was only through email and not in my eBay Inbox. Then I checked the email address and it was "pay-service@paypalsonline.com". Yep, we're all Pay "Pals" here.

haha, well after posting here I got an email from "Ebay" saying I have a 2nd chance to purchase the 70-200 IS II for my bid of $1475. If I want it I have to contact the seller. Halirious and they even link certain stuff back to the real ebay, such as terms and conditions.
