Ok...
So i just got an i7 true quad core pc laptop. I added a 500 gig ssd drive that reads and writes at 500mbs. It has a 3 gig nvidia card (unlocked for mercury playback engine) and 32 gigs of ram. I have premiere installed on the main drive which is a 5400 1 tb dinasaur. I added my red files to the ssd im getting barely and playback at 1/2 res and okay playback at 1/4 in a 1080 timeline. My question is should have the host app on the ssd or the hdd? Im going to eventually buy a red rocket/sonnett set up. Anything I can do to improve? Im no pc guru :)

Thanks in advance

Hi Fransico,

Sounds pretty normal to me. I'm on a desktop core i7 quadcore and I edit at 1/4 res for stable snappy realtime playback. You would need more CPU grunt to be playing back at a higher res in realtime. RedRocket should help if you're working with 4K files. If your working with 5K, a single Rocket may even struggle.

Regarding your placement of the app, I personally would probably run it from the SSD, this won't really improve the performance of the app from a benchmarking perspective, but it should help Premiere feel a fair bit snappier to launch and work with.

Yeah, I seem to recall red footage, even at it's highest, only being like 55megs/second (maybe that was 4k 6:1 Scarlet footage)... Playback is definitely CPU/Debayer limited, not HDD/SSD read/write limited.

Francisco.

You need to install your OS and Apps on your SSD Drive. A 5400 RPM drive will lag your performance and be your bottleneck in Premiere.

It's time to say good buy to the Dinosaur.

If your editing Epic footage, use the 5kFF, 5kWS, whatever you shot the majority of your footage on as your sequence setting. I'm seeing users say they get faster playback with this method.

Furthermore, 500GB is not enough for your RED footage. Look into a RAID 5 unit for speed and protection. Some recommendations:

I've never tried a RR card but have heard from other users that a RR will not give you smooth playback of a 5KFF R3D in Premiere or RCX. 4K yes. The card is showing it's age.

The good new is 1/2 is more than enough for editing. Hope that helps some.
