Announcing Scarlet-W

Love this camera! Thanks to everyone at RED for making such an amazing camera at such an accessible price. I don't see anything on the market that compares.

Now for the question. I do a ton of handheld work. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like you can either put a top handle or a side handle on it, but not both. Is that correct? Any chance of a side handle of this type in development? Thanks!

Jarred Announced in another thread they have been making the new side handle, which isnt releasing yet but he will have some prototypes to show us very soon. So to answer your question YES there will be a side handle DSMC 2

I was looking for scarlet-w forum but still not created.

When scarlet forum will create? Like Weapon, RAVEN and others forums.
Also it’s nice to see order queue to know when you will get your camera and how many orders is there before you.
Who’s responsible to do the forums?? He should start making it.

There is a Scarlet forum already.

Raven is a new camera, so it makes sense that it gets a new forum. Weapon probably got a new forum because it's a new form factor…

Well see what happens, maybe Scarlet W gets its own place too. In the meantime just post in the Scarlet forum.

Might be easier if the 'Weapon', 'Raven' and (non-existent) ''Scarlet-W' camera sub-forums were pulled from the 'Red Digital Cinema' section (along with the 'DSMC-2, The Weapon, The Scarlet-W and the Raven and the improvements that they bring.' sticky thread from the 'Recon' section) and put into their own 'The DSMC2 System' section, similar to but separate from the current 'The DSMC System' section where the 'Epic', 'Scarlet' and 'RED One' sub-forums reside.

Well it would be easier but would it be RED accurate? Obviously these are all DSMC 2 but with Scarlet (bent toward 5K down res mastering!) we do see the RED SYSTEM at work in its best intentions perhaps? With Scarlet we have MX, we have Dragon to work with Epic Dragon and now we have Dragon within DSMC 2. Of course Weapon is now in a class by itself!

Does scarlet-w do HDRX, don't see it on the specs ?

I believe all DSMC2 bodies do HDRx.

ha, well im not a big believer in beliefs .. any clarity incoming from red would be appreciated
..ive seen many functions come and go from red cameras .. like lens metadata in the red one, 1080p full frame downsampled output from epic x ..there is quite a long list of "subject to change".. hdrx is one that came from the opposite direction, and happened

if someone from red is feeling informative, id like to know when my camera (epic dragon) ..is recording 12bit, and when it is recording 16 bit raw also .. otherwise it might as well be a 12-bit codec , and the 16bit reference can be removed from the specs .. unless we are in the business of not knowing what we are recording, and that is the new shooting paradigm .. ive asked this question about 100 times .. i may have to write a letter and post it ..

Sorry - I thought I'd be nice and post what I had seen in on RU but I really didn't want to do YOUR homework and find the exact place that I had seen it. There is a lot of information available on RU if you search for it.

Les did make a good point on the need for DSMC 2 section to make things easier to find/know. Weapon came first and is the top dog so perhaps a sticky/etc for all things DSMC 2 on performance/accessories for Weapon/Raven/Scarlet W should go there?

Was just a suggestion, I'm sure they'll organize/re-organize things as they need to.

Just realized I made a mistake with the forum categories though. The 'Weapon', 'Raven' and (non-existent) 'Scarlet-W' camera sub-forums are in the 'Red Digital Cinema' section, not the 'Recon' section. I also jumped ship on the BMD 4.6K. Have a Raven preorder in, but will be switching it over to Scarlet-W shortly once the funds are confirmed.

Jarred and Brent, you offer more feedback in a single forum post than BMD does in a year. The decision was an easy one. Thanks!

I had an order in since early September for a URSA Mini 4.6k and finally gave up. My decision was based entirely on the announcement of the Scarlet-W. Red's track record is much better than Blackmagic IMHO.

I put in my Ursa Mini 4.6K pre-order shortly after I walked out of the press conference at NAB (one of the benefits of having a press pass).
