  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing RED RAVEN

I'm one of them. As it stands, I think the $19k price tag is absolutely ridiculous for what you get. Others seem to see value in it though and good for them. I, however, might grab me one of them Ravens instead, heh heh.

Ridiculous is a strong word, I might not go that far but if you compare the pricing between Weapon MG and Raven its pretty obvious that Raven is a bargain.
My prayers go out to Jarred for some 'Weapon MG love' for us Epic Dragon owners wanting to arm.

Because several people asked for it: FOOTAGE 4K Dragon 5:1 compression because my crusty old Scarlet Dragon can't go lower unlike the sexy new bitch Raven.

Thanks a lot Brian for helping out!

I've passed this around a bit through PM's.

Thanks again Jeffrey. I didn't want to mention your name before in case everyone would nag on you! =)

Anyway, even if there was an m4/3 mount it would not effect the "crop factor."

Whether it be an EF or MFT mount a 7 or 8mm lens is going to be a 7 or 8mm lens. Agreed. However, since Canon makes lenses for cameras that have larger sensors than those Pana and Olympus make typically they also make longer lenses and that might be the relevant point. No discussion of crop factor required.

I'm sure Red didn't specifically choose to make Raven's 4k compatible to MFT, it just so happened that due to cutting Full frame 8k sensors in half [or whatever they are doing] this has been an outcome. If you like going wide the options are a lot more attractive in MFT. I think thats the general point and the semantic debate over crop factor is best put aside.

I'm not sure what Red's intentions are for Raven in the future but at some point down the track I'd suggest other mount options would be well received. More options, more customers. I'm sure they understand this. Is it worth making more than 1 Raven, who knows outside of Red themselves.

My feeling is that even if they have considered MFT, and i'm sure its been considered, that EF would be first mount offered for many reasons. Not least of which being the fact that they've already profiled all of Canons lenses and thats the mount that plays the best on Red's platform. Flawless electronic control of the multitude of lenses in the MFT space, which of course would be expected to work out of the box on a 10k camera system, is a big job and one I'd imagine if Red attempt at all they'll do down the track once the Raven production line is really humming. And likely also behind Nikon and PL offerings too.

RED, you sneaky bastards!

I guess you saw this one coming:

Someone is one step ahead! =)

Hey guys, I think I'm going to get me a Raven.

However, I just bought a smallHD 702. I need a bright monitor for shooting wildlife and sports. I don't really need the red 4.7" monitor. But is there a way to actually control the camera without the touch screen? I don't want to use foolcontrol in the field. I mean with the epic, you could use the side handle.

I'd love some advice because it will determine whether I chuck a deposit on the brain only or a package.

Fool Control my friend, Fool Control. However, the package is a sweet deal, too good to pass up, you WILL want the accessories

i dont get it

The original image is from a post by Jarred when he presents the new 4.7 monitor. But after a tip from Brent, he said "pay attention to the handle". It's a yet unannounced side handle.

The original image is very dark and you barely see the handle. I brought it into PS to lift the shadows, but obviously someone had already anticipated that move and made sure there was nothing to find—the handle is masked.

To be clear, I think RAVEN may be one of the most transformative things RED has ever done.

Gotta tip your hat to RED.

They started as company that REDEFINED INDIE cinema.

And it looks like they've done it again.

BRAVO.

More people being able to make amazing imagery...is always a good thing.

And being on the ground floor of a revolution....priceless.

Interesting side handle with the gap. No RV's in that one, going to be more like an Outrigger with a record button, I imagine.

It's transformative for sure Nick. They are not leaving money on the table and pushing past the pro market, and going mainstream without a doubt. Cheaper camera manufacturers have caught up to Red and they are going for the jugluar in the sub $10,000 4K war. Also, the Raven is essentially a "gateway drug" to Red's more potient camera lines as customers move up in their careers. I'm looking forward to walking into my favorite video store.. Samy's, Abelcine, B&H and seeing the Raven perched right next to the Sonys and Panasonics.

Now when is that Raven Mini coming out?

Isn't that what this place is for?

Red bashing for no good reason isnt productive heh.. but hey everyone is entitled to their opinion, I think most people see the benefits to this camera. For my part, i look at it as more than a new camera. This tool will bring more people, younger people (i think someone mentioned they were buying it for their son, as i will prob give my son mine when he is old enough) into the world of digital film making, and that is very exciting. More experienced PEOPLE make content better, and makes life on set easier. i think RED has done something that will set a new standard for ALL Projects big and small, and i am loving the idea that "the right tool for the job" absolutely applies here. if you don't like this offering, please purchase a BMD product and get back to me on how that's going for ya~
