  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing RED RAVEN

It will not resolve the crop factor.

Flange distance. I've played with some of the 4K Dragon footage...I don't think the crop factor is that big of a deal. Everything I have seen looks really good...especially for the price.

They can redesign the front of the cam', don't they? I'm sure we would all pay more for that option..

Brent, can we have your answer about that?

From my uneducated view:
Raven - clearly the value leader now. If you are shooting and delivering 4K @24fps this is a 98% solution for 15% of the cost of Weapon
Scarlet - No Idea where this camera sits in the line or who it is targeting. What was that NAB trade-up all about if Raven was on the way?
Dragon - With Raven, it is now way overpriced and therefore the resale value will dropped a bunch. Again, not sure who this is currently targeting since it is neither a high value nor the highest performance product. Without the heavy upgrade cost to Weapon it is EOL.
Monochrome Dragon - seems to also be EOL since no 8K upgrade path has been announced
Weapon - Rental market and feature films

Seems that RED now has the lowest and highest new customers taken care of, at the asset value cost of the middle existing customers. Very confusing for now, but I'm sure RED has a way to make it right for those of us who bought in early and often. Would love to see RED's 1-3-5 year plan for products.

The Raven doesn't have a 19.4 Megapixel sensor. The Raven can't do 100fps at 6K resolution or 5K at 120fps. The Raven can't accept PL Mount lenses or Nikon or Leica.

It's easy to see where the RED EPIC Dragon is lined up. It's for people that want to shoot at the highest resolution at higher fps, with PL mount lenses or have an option to use other lenses. I really can't see how the Raven threatens the Dragon. It compliments it. I held off on getting a Scarlet camera... will definitely get a Raven. Plus whats all this hoopla about ProRes/3d LUTS... you can still get WiFi, 3D LUTS and Apple ProRes with a Dragon... just not internally... lol. That shouldn't be a big deal with all the cool stuff from Atomos and SmallHD.

One question that I didn't find in this topic yet (sorry if already asked and answered).
Might be too soon to ask, Dragon is a kick-ass sensor, but are you guys planning on having future sensor upgrades for Raven. Like, was Raven designed to have sensors upgrades?
Not that this is a deal breaker or anything, just something more to consider for it.
Thanks guys!

Brent, please tell us that this fixed Ef mount problem is being discussed in the Red garage.. A M43 mount would make this Raven Camera "CRAZILY AGRESSIVE" and resolve its 2 major problems:

- The 1.87 killer Crop factor

- The Ef fixed mount

I know you heard that before but again, a M43 mount would make me buy in a heartbeat .. I'm even ready to pay more for that mount..

OMG! Shoot me!

Just that this subject has been covered well enough in these threads so to keep asking it in hopes of expecting a different answer caused me to spout off. I sort of regret doing that. Anyway, even if there was an m4/3 mount it would not effect the "crop factor."

nobody cares about M43 mount and it looks like you are the only one making fuss about it.

The biggest gripe over the web seems to be the absence of a PL model of this otherwise fantastic camera. Just as an observation.

Its where Weapon and Dragon comes play :)

Yeah, but these beasts are waaay more expensive and market today offers a lot of affordable PL options. It's just wise to invest in glass that you can use on multiple cameras and that is futureproof.

I see it wildly differently.

This doesn't address spec to price discrepancy.

There's a big gap in price and small gap in spec.

Yes it would have been interesting but it's much more than just resolution that is different between the models as others stated.
I think many of us Epic Dragon owners would really consider jumping over to Weapon MG if the price were lower.

I'm one of them. As it stands, I think the $19k price tag is absolutely ridiculous for what you get. Others seem to see value in it though and good for them. I, however, might grab me one of them Ravens instead, heh heh.
