  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing RED RAVEN

Got our spot in line for the brain! Do we need to get in line ASAP for the 4.7" display and Weapon Revolt XL module? They both say coming soon. I want to make sure that when the brain ships that we can actually use it.

Same goes for mini mags, they are coming soon. Do i need to order them ASAP?
I think it's difficult to predict how the stock-situation looks once RAVEN starts shipping. But with all the pre-orders and deposits being made RED has some numbers to be prepared. RED has become pretty good in those things, it always looks like most of the stuff is in stock nowadays. Much better than in the early days. ;)

However, if i were totally new to the eco-system i would order essential accessories a month or two in advance to the expected RAVEN delivery, media and batteries maybe just 2 weeks earlier (because of the limited warranty). Just enough to start you shooting, get the additional mags and batteries afterwards.

And it's always good to stay in contact with your Bomb-Squad.

Placed order last night (I/O) as soon as order page was up. Raven looks amazing.

I'm smalltime owner/op shoot for web, coming from DSLR (70D). Looking to increase production values and increase aesthetics of our videos.

One thing I'm not sure about with Raven is ergonomics for run-and-gun. It's billed as versatile for documentaries, yet I don't see a sidegrip or handle for handheld work like Scarlet.

Am I missing something? Hopefully we'll see some options pop up in the store soon. Meanwhile I wonder if I'm better off with another camera better suited for the event stuff we do. In the end will give RED a go, pretty excited to develop my skills. RED... the name... the mystique... the image... (preaches to the choir)

I've been thinking all along this is a rush job to get into a new market for RED and they just cobbled together what was available

I am offended by this statement. RAVEN has been in development for a very long time.... When Weapon development began... and it took alot of incredible work by alot of incredible people to make a reality that you just took a shit on. RAVEN has all new bits inside.. the sensor is new and not a masked hand me down, the boards aren't recycled they are new, the mechanicals are all new.

So please... keep your comments to yourself.

O.K.

I have no personal connection with the Weapon MG, but my sense of fair play has me wishing RED would put the same boards in MG as they have in CF and Forged. Keep the 8k upgrade into the future but have the MG ready for that upgrade with just a $20,000 (or less, if feasible) sensor swap when that day comes.

I think this is something that could be done that would make the MG depositors happy and the CF owners (me included) having no problem with that.

Feature this:

THere are not that many Carbon Fiber Dragon Owners, but their trade in Value is $22.5, far disproportionate to the $17.5 for Dragon no CF owners... So, if Mg++gets a favorable prie break, the subsidy that CF owners paid for that is unrequited, for the CF owner. Further, the Raven arguably removes the 1 lb. or so weight savings premium that CF had, for many users.

Now, rental may or may not have been part of the game plan for CF purchasers and there is no figuring equitable treatment, but the brute dollars are way off. One can discuss all sorts of permutations, but the dollars are the dollars. Sadly, every turn of the upgrade/newgrade screw has had that effect.in some measure, for CF owners. Again, there have been signin=ficant benefits for me personally to have had the CF, when I did, but I can see pmany who might feel concerned or worse that their $15K deposit for upgrade of CF to 8K Weapon will not have the same value as it did prior and even when NAB announcement was made. Not to say the elements aren't still there and many will still reason the valuation is there-in fact, it is, even more so, almost necessary for a CF current owner to upgrade or have a ~$15K camera, sitting on the shelf, albeit at a greater net cost than any other pathway in place and maybe another to come (Mg++). RED could easily treat those who bought the flagship piece, with some additional consideration as well and feel it less-far less. ;-)

AT any rate, that Raven is a very appealing addition and will erase a missing element in RED's offerings, while making an additional real estate acquisition, for RED, necessary, IMHO. Lotta tough decisions for many here, as the options expand and the rhetoric flows.

Thank you very much

Brent, please tell us that this fixed Ef mount problem is being discussed in the Red garage.. A M43 mount would make this Raven Camera "CRAZILY AGRESSIVE" and resolve its 2 major problems:

- The 1.87 killer Crop factor

- The Ef fixed mount

I know you heard that before but again, a M43 mount would make me buy in a heartbeat .. I'm even ready to pay more for that mount..

I agree that the side handle with buttons and revolt on the scarlet / epic was an awesome form factor for run and gun shooting. Looking forward to seeing what new bits allow for that style of shooting.

I just landed back from my trip to Japan. First thing I did with phone back on is check on Jarred's posts.
What a cool camera. This checks a lot of boxes! It feels like the original scarlet days all over again. Just way cooler.

Great job guys!

It will not resolve the crop factor.

Flange distance. I've played with some of the 4K Dragon footage...I don't think the crop factor is that big of a deal. Everything I have seen looks really good...especially for the price.

Thanks for answering the HDRx question Brent!
