  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing RED RAVEN

What I still think is a bit of a bummer is the mount.
It cant be that much cheaper to make it with fixed ef mount than like the epic with swapable mount.

i think the ef mount is whats holding me back from buying this.
I got an ef mount for epic and i like ef glass and see all the benefits with the electronics and so on. But if it could take a pl mount, fd mount leica mount and so on, even if they where all low cost dumb mounts this camera would be just so much more. But i guess its to differentiate it from the scarlets. But it must be cheaper to make 4 screwholes and swapable mount than fixed mount.
So i hope there is a raven 2 with removed front comming :)

I don't mean this to sound conspiratorial, but my thinking is they went with the Canon mount because it works well with FoolControl. It has to sound cool in the outside world (outside of REDuser) when they hear the camera has a working solution to being operated via Wi Fi right out of the box(es).

I've been thinking all along this is a rush job to get into a new market for RED and they just cobbled together what was available into an attractive package using tech they've already had or seen developed.

Like you I would have liked an interchangeable mount but I've already got that. The majority of the people buying the RAVEN don't necessarily have oodles of other glass and will adapt to the mount. Maybe as the RAVEN progresses, and maybe even before it starts shipping, they will be open to allowing us to choose the mount we want if fixed, or perhaps offer an interchangeable.

I'm guessing they are in the prototype stage at present and when the dust settles, more options may surface.

I think the EF makes perfect sense when one considers maybe who they are going after. There are those who will like the focus by remote. But then Leica R will work great. And of course there is the crappy line of OTUS EF that is ever building :o

I am with many that the difference between the Raven capability and the MG as next rung, is a bit absurd. Especially now. And if Raven has got any type of dark side, it is that it has delivered so much for so cheap that it makes the Weapon MG look crazy. Fully kitted cam in new DSMC with pro rez at 3:1 4K for under 10. And then for a Dragon owner to get their sensor into a new body is multiples of this 3-4 times actually. I think Red will adjust with time as it becomes ever more flush with Raven sales. At least that is my hope.

I certainly agree with you and hope the same. I certainly would NOT upgrade to Weapon currently, knowing I could buy two RAVEN PACKAGES for the same price...AND keep my Epic Dragon.

... I'm sure RED has a way to make it right for those of us who bought in early and often. Would love to see RED's 1-3-5 year plan for products.

Totally agree with all of your points but this is the one I am counting on! In my experience, RED has always come through.

For myself RED has come through.

Purchased my BT Scarlet Fall 2012.

To date I am working on feature length films on my spare time :)

This was my goal and I thank RED for that ;)

With you totally. I think the core problem is the sensor is the same. 1/2 a stop in the black and a couple of anomalies perhaps fixed. It is hard to justify when you know head to head in the right hands the two cams can pretty much be indistinguishable. So it is a DSMC change to 2.0 - and the Raven reveals that this can be done economically. MG specs need to go up to 4K Pro Rez etc at least - and I think price needs to come down.

Next week I am going to make a point of shooting Dragon at the Raven spec just to see for myself as it has been a long time since doing that and want to see the difference between 6K for 4K and 4K for 4K as a refresher.
I think I know the answer but what the heck. I think I am going to rename my Dragon "Vintage" :)

Two hours of sleep. Check.
Red Bull gone. Check.
Caught up on REDUSER. Check

Let me address some posts…

Nice!
Just a few questions:

-DSMC² Universal Handle: Does it has a start/stop function?
-DSMC² Base I/O V-Lock Expander: Is it possible to attach V-mount batteries directly to this module to feed the camera?
-Does the camera has the HDR-X function?
-How is possible to achieve 16.5stops as the bigger Dragon 6K sensor? Are the shadows going to be as clean as the 6K Dragon?

Thanks in advance

No. But DSMC² Outrigger does.
Yes, it is Base Expander with v-lock on back.
Yes.
It is same sensor, just smaller.

Thank you Red for (again) opening new doors for young filmmakers, artists, visionaries, and nut-jobs alike!

No, thank YOU. And welcome : )

What about a side handle...?

DSMC² UNIVERSAL HANDLE in the works. Images soon, part of RAVEN Base I/O kit.
DSMC² Outrigger in the works, images soon. Part of RAVEN JETPACK kit. Has record start/stop.
And I believe Jarred teased a third side handle offering in a fairly recent pic...

Late to the party. Killer question that I don't have the time to search through 50 pages for:

Is there an upgrade path from Scarlet MX? Or maybe now a new path to Epic MX?!?!? ; )

Thanks,

Not at this time, nope.

Now that the servers have chilled out I can finally log into my RED account

So my Deposit didn't go through in my Open Orders but Red is still holding $1 on my Bank Account lol

Not sure what happened here

The $1 pre-auth is not us holding it. We check for a valid credit card and funds but per-thing for $1. It is not an actual charge. Your bank will drop the pre-auth. Usually a business day or so.

I too think that it is premature to look sadly at the Epic Dragon sitting in the corner with its tail between its legs. So much is really going to depend on the type of work you like to do, and what arena you play in. There are two factors. Personal taste as a film-maker. The professional demands of TV and movie production. For narrative the Epic Dragon as a downscale to 4K from 5K, 5.5K and 6K is where the pros live. I am not making TV shows for Netflix etc but I know people who are and who test and this is where they say the Dragon shines. For my own work I have seen the same to be true. Downscaled 5-6K for 4 or lower is tight. It is the kitty.

Raven does not knock that off its perch by a mile and if you were going to do a narrative for Netflix lets say. Wouldn't you, as they, want the best for your project? Of course you would. And that would be Dragon and slowly the Weapon.

Raven shines as a contender for different kinds of work. It is an alternative to Ursa, Sony and Canon or Arri. But the key word is alternative. Red has a look. I like it. Many here love it. But out in the jungle of production it is one flavor of many. Some like the looks of other sensors. They see them as more luminous, crisper, realer, truer, pretty colors etc etc.... They are not wrong. And Red has its thing going and its excellent in my opinion.

I think Raven is great play by Red as it draws people into their new ecosystem. In sheer dollars I think is a smart play by them in a highly competitive field. Raven owners are getting something really special. But they will covet the next step, and the next. Because if we are all honest we know Dragon 6K is great. Weapon 8K will be nuts. Raven will eat Dragons lunch on small projects where the Raven will be perceived as the new toy, and Dragon to be overkill. But Dragon is the better tool and until well into middle or end of next year is going to have thin competition.

At least that is my hope.

Meanwhile owning an Epic Dragon is not the saddest story that ever was. Except that perhaps people who came new to Epic paid the most for the Red privilege.

I have no personal connection with the Weapon MG, but my sense of fair play has me wishing RED would put the same boards in MG as they have in CF and Forged. Keep the 8k upgrade into the future but have the MG ready for that upgrade with just a $20,000 (or less, if feasible) sensor swap when that day comes.

I think this is something that could be done that would make the MG depositors happy and the CF owners (me included) having no problem with that.

Got our spot in line for the brain! Do we need to get in line ASAP for the 4.7" display and Weapon Revolt XL module? They both say coming soon. I want to make sure that when the brain ships that we can actually use it.

Because several people asked for it: FOOTAGE 4K Dragon 5:1 compression because my crusty old Scarlet Dragon can't go lower unlike the sexy new bitch Raven. Sorry Red to hijack your thread with all the comments this footage will generate about how damn cute my dogs are. Footage will be up for one week.
