Announcing RED RAVEN

Well who wants to buy an epic mx?....haha man thanks red! Your guys are awesome! :) Just when i thought i could not move into the dragon world you pull us aside and say welcome to new erra of dynamic range and color science. Welcome young one! So stoed on this new camera. I just wish it was not shipping mid winter :(

So can somebody smarter than me explain what would be my motivation to keep my $5k deposit down to buy a Weapon Mg?
2 extra k's of resolution for 30k dollars?

Seems like a huge gap. The Weapon pricing is confusing me right now.

Yeah, $6K then $34.5K. Huge gap.

I will probably start off with the Raven. But would be great if they had a 4.5K Weapon with interchangeable mounts (ef and PL) and OLPFs for around $20K, right in the middle of the two. That would be perfect for me price wise and feature wise.
While the Dragon is kind of that camera, the Weapon body with the Auto Black Shade, lower fan noise, better temperatures and lighter; just make me feel like the older Epic body will be phased out soon as it makes no sense.

I have an E-Mount Sony FS7 (which I will keep for ENG) and that mount is so versatile and I've never had a problem and has many good PL mount adapters. Since Jarred is saying Raven is very close to a APS-C, not sure if Micro 4/3 would work? E-mount would cover perfectly though and the Speed Booster option is amazing.

just preordered mine can't wait!!!

6K resolution.
Much LARGER sensor (33% bigger - and therefore much different sense of perspective/depth control).
Swappable OLPFs
3D Luts
Option to upgrade to Carbon and 8K (which is 4X the size of RAVEN, for perspective)
Swappable Mounts (PL/EOS/Nikon/Hasselblad, etc)
Motion Mount Capable

That said, I agree. Price/performance ratio of RAVEN is certainly something we've rarely seen before.

More info needed... are you trading in a camera for the Weapon MG? Are you getting a production package free with the MG? Do you have an accessory credit added to your account? Do you have PL lenses or other lenses different from Canon? Lots of things to be considered.

rental market. the desire to take advantage of all dem pixels for resizing, lookaround, VFX, etc. future-proofing believe it or not. interchangeable mounts and OLPFs. downsampling. The only chance to take advantage of the upgrade path, in case you want all of the above, otherwise it will cost you more....

did I miss anything?

E-Mount or Micro 4/3 wont work. The Weapon DSMC² design is based around a longer flange length.

Magnesium doesn't have 4K ProRes. Only 2K.

6K resolution.
Swappable OLPFs
4K Prores
3D Luts
Option to upgrade to Carbon and 8K (which is 4X the size of RAVEN, for perspective)
Swappable Mounts (PL/EOS/Nikon/Hasselblad, etc)

I don't know what's inconvenient about V-Mount, considering it's one of the most popular options in cinema!!

There are rumors of a sidehandle too. I assume it will hold Redvolts.

thanks for the quick answers !
Well actually, I don't really see how this V mount is attached on the Raven ?

Yep that sidehandle looks like a great option with some redvolts, wondering why it is not out, even for the weapon

ok, thanks again, but if the new i/o is very slim and has a v-mount, i guess it makes sense to go with the bricks then adding a whole other monitor…
i wonder if the new i/o would be something like this size with a v-mount
http://www.red.com/store/products/weapon-base-expander
I expect the Base I/O V-Lock expander to be thicker than the Base I/O alone but thinner than Base I/O + Element Technica's V-Mount plate, which you can see here: https://elementtechnica.com/product/w-v-mount-battery-module/

I weight and size is your main concern, then the batteries will play a more important part than the module. But keep in mind, with the REDVOLT XL module (or Element Technica's V-Lock) you could actually left the Base I/O at home and save a little weight.

The Base I/O V-Lock Expander is a smart and cost-effective solution for sure, if i were new to the game i would highly consider it. But on the other hand the modularity of a splitted power and i/o-solution has it's advantages too. ;)

The Base I/O package comes with this:

DSMC² Base I/O V-Lock Expander

Which has Vmount included.

The sidehandle is something ET is still working on. I'm sure we'll hear more about it in due time.

Yeah.... I mean, Raven looks GREAT. But ouch - that's a humongous gap in price for an oddly non humongous gap in specs. I would have thought Raven wouldn't do Pro Res.

MG Weapon is only 2K PRORES. No 4K (from red.com specs)

6K resolution.
Swappable OLPFs
4K Prores
3D Luts
