  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcement: I have applied to be an astronaut in the Mars One program

Looks like their whole voting system has been compromised; even the most popular person right now has a rating of under 4, while yesterday it was close to 5.

I just hope that they do not chose the candidates based on the star rating alone.

5 stars from me, from all browsers. Best of luck on this gutsy endeavor.

There is a totally private section not viewable by others, where the more traditional application type questions are being asked.

In fact, a couple of those private questions reminded me of my Air Force pilot interviews!

So yes, there's definitely more than just the public facing part at play when it comes to astronaut selection. As it should be, given what is at stake.

Cheers,

Paul :)

so I guess you won't be taking the Creative Cloud subscription? :-)
Haha! :D

Actually I'm already using it so it'll just be a continuation....

Guess I'll have to edit locally and then send the resulting RedRay files back to Earth via satellite transmission! Luckily the file sizes are relatively small!

Cheers,

Paul :)

Anyway Paul, I think it is great you have done this. Good luck with it!

About 10 years ago after shooting for a doc, we had lunch with the parents of an astronaut, who at the time had spent more time in space than anyone. We were in a very old English Pub, ducks swimming in a nearby pond set against a timeless English landscape. All very quaint.

Talking about the success of his son, the father says, in a matter-of-factually and in a typically parental, disapproving tone...well (sons name), wants to go to Mars.... of course we can't stop him!

Had to pinch myself as it really bought home how close we were to travelling to another planet.

Roll on 10 years and now the public have a shot at it!

Just as Richard Branson has had some success with Virgin Galactic, so could private flights to Mars, although, whilst the former is on track for maiden passenger flights in the near future, perhaps the prospect of the latter is some time off, best of luck in any event, you are in the queue to journey to Mars!

Pinch!

I came up with an propulsion design years ago that should make a mars trip a day journey. Should have pursued that, will probably only take a few hundred $k to validate if it would work. I remember years latter somebody came up with another version a fraction of a percent efficient, that everybody was getting excited about, they nicknamed it the infinity engine of something. I should be able to remember the name, I bought a number of copies of a magazine featuring it. I was aiming for above 90% efficiency in my design.

An update for everyone - I am through to the second round as of tonight! Mars One culled roughly 200,000 applicants down to 1058, of which I am one :)

Help me get a Red to the Red planet!! :D

Cheers from Tokyo (for now!),

Congrats.

Lemme know when they figure out how to deliver a pastrami sandwich from Katz's Deli to Mars. Then maybe I'd consider it.

Congratulations Paul,

I always thought such a journey would be made by a human brain in a robotic body. Maybe that will still be the case. If so, and if you are one of the chosen, I hope you get to pick a body you are comfortable in. '-)

P.S. Don't forget to take a 3-d printer along, just in case something wears out. '-)

Thanks all for your words of encouragement!

Here's the original application video I created for Round 1, which helped me get to Round 2 (I've mirrored it in the first post too):

If you wish to help contribute to the project and believe in what we are setting out to do, you can donate here and claim your part in helping me get to Mars with such rewards as having your selfie taken in orbit around Mars, T-shirts and more:

Cheers!

Paul :)
