  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Annihilation

If anyone know anyone over at Netflix that could look into this because the quality of the 1080p version is pure crap. I'm stunned this cleared through QC.

There's also a thread about this SDR clipping problem over on the LiftGammaGain.com forum, so it does appear to be a real problem:

The theory seems to be that the HDR looks fine, but the SDR (which theoretically is made from the metadata in the HDR file) is not right.

Here in the U.S., we can't yet watch Annhiliation because it's still in theaters, but I look forward to seeing it on Netflix.

I waited for the longest time to buy an UHD TV, but a while back now I picked up "last year's" 65" LG, OLED for pretty cheap. That, together with Netflix UHD-plan is a pretty good spot to be in now I think.

I see the shitty picture that everybody is commenting on when I look in SDR on a computer. Like Christoffer says: the trailer is much better than that in that regard–another level. But looking at the correct trailer and then looking at the Dolby Vision version.... well, that's ANOTHER level.

Between the Sci-Fi elements, the shimmer, the lush jungle scenes with fantasy elements and the ending—I'd go as far as to say that Annihilation is quite the poster child for Netflix UHD Dolby Vision. It was mastered in 4k too.

I'm counting on you fine folks to have the sense to judge these screens for what they are. But you can still get a feeling for the difference.

I'm interested in where the problem lies. Is it Paramount giving Netflix a 1080p SDR version with this problem or is it Netflix themselves who converted it wrong? Did they get a REC2020 copy and converted it to SDR without compressing the HDR? What is going on? Because even if this is remarkable in HDR, most people don't have it and they're stuck with it's shitty look as it is now. I have a lot of friends who've said that Annihilation looks like shit so Netflix and Paramount already blew it. People won't go back and see it again just because they fix the problem, but they should definitely fix it asap. Otherwise an illegal download of a Blu-ray rip is the only way to see a digital copy that's even remotely good looking.

HDR masters can have "dynamic metadata" that tells how to create an SDR version on a scene-by-scene basis. So maybe Netflix has automatically created an SDR version but the metadata has not been utilized.

Why illegal download?

Because if all digital SDR copies have gone through Paramounts QC and have this problem that means no digital copy is correctly balanced for SDR and the only one that looks correct is the Blu-Ray copy, which means a rip of that. I would gladly pay digital download price and illegally download it just to have a correct version, because I never trust QC people to sort out their mess.

Um, what I meant was, since You're not an illegal person, why don't You download it personally, instead of illegally, and don't let anyone tell You differently?! :wink5:
With the rest I agree 100%.

Haha, well, I'm thinking that if I'm officially telling I'm doing it, it might be a kick in the ass of the people in charge to fix the issue for real :tongue_smilie: so I'm doing it more as a statement than for myself.

Seems like some shots are made on the Weapon as well, which is interesting since nothing is mentioned at Red.com?

Haa I figured my network connection was bad at the time, and netflix was delivering me a shitty version. Turns out everybody on netflix get the shitty quality. Good job Netflix, well done.

Note on the film:
I did not really like the ending though. Why would they let them talk to each other, surely there would be blood tests etc. And they would know something is off. Also confused why Natalie(forgot the characters name) is asking, you are not my husband right. And then still hugs him?
Maybe she is comforted just by the thought of him(his physical appearance). Natalie seems to remember everything, so she is the original Natalie.

Yeah, I don't know why they aren't fixing this issue, it's mind boggling that this went through QC without anyone noticing. I'm not sure they'll gonna fix it though, incompetence is strong with this one.

As for the end, she asks where her husband is, they say he's in quarantine, she says "me too", that's why she can visit him. There's no indication that there's anything dangerous about their situation either, the shimmer is gone and they aren't carrying a decease as far as they know. The reason she hugs him is because he is just as much Kane as the original. After both of them traveled through the area, their cells are already changed, doesn't matter if they are a copy or not, they are a part of other things. Even Kane says this in the video, "I thought I was a man, now I'm not so sure". Even though this is the original Lena, she's a mix of much of what we've seen. Kane's clone doesn't have his self-destructive tendencies, while Lena gave her clone her's, just like cells carry over these programming to new cells. She's rid of her self-destructive tendencies and can return to the version of Kane that is the same as her.

One of the interesting things is the connection to Henrietta Lacks (book she's reading); if their cells are changed in the end and the shimmer seem to regenerate (as Kane could recover), coupled with the dialogue about how cells carry over self-destructive programming and if they didn't they would live forever, I think that both Kane and Lena are immortal in the end. They've evolved past normal cell based annihilation.

Rumor has it, it's been fixed—if you want to rewatch it.

Yeah, I watched it again last night and it's fixed. I believe someone got fired :tonge_smilie:

Just imagine the rage Alex Garland and Rob Hardy would have against Netflix because of this, not a fuckup you want to do for filmmakers who didn't want to go to Netflix in the first place. I would be surprised if Alex would ever go with Netflix in the future because of this.

All exteriors/interiors of Area X were shot on Red - everything else was shot on Sony F65 in conjunction with the F55. The F65 shots look much softer and hazy, whereas the Red footage was sharp and vivid.

I thought most of the F65 looked great in this film. Quite beautiful and natural, for example in the bedroom flashbacks.
