  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'm trying to figure out the angle of view of a 35mm on the Epic W FF. did maths calculation and the result was 23.3 degrees. that's not accurate. is it possible that the pixel size change the equation?
could anyone help me please.

RED's tools gives us a 44.8mm equivalence in relation to a normal stills 35mm sensor.

When I popped that into an online calculator I got 51.6 deg FoV for the diagonal. Seems reasonable. For the horizontal plane it will be slightly less.

Maybe RED could add FoV to their calculator page where it deals with crop factor?

thanks Andree, my calculation gave me 46.3 degrees, but I'm not sure about it and started this thread. it would be nice to have this on the Red tool app

Show your work. I calculated AOV for 12mm Laowa lens on Monstro and got answer that matched image test:

Aov = 2*atan (d/2f)

2 * atan (40.96mm / 24) = 119 deg

Which is correct.

I believe Andree is correct. What you want is the apparent field of view, not the equivalent focal length or the crop factor of your FullFrame still lens. I don't believe the angle of view changes. It all depends on the aspect ratio and the sensor mode you are using.

Helium sensor is 29.9mm wide. So for a 35mm focal length, AOV is...

2 * atan(29.9 / 70) = 46.26°

...I really do not like RED’s tools for this as their numbers often don’t match up. It seems they want to convert everything to crop factors related to FF35mm or S35 and calculate from there, must do a bunch of rounding off along the way.
