I look at the Nikon 15mm AIS and lists as angle of view 110-115 degrees (I read different versions)...

The Tokina 11-16mm is 108 degrees at 11mm but as it's an ap-c lens so at 12mm it covers more than the above Nikon covers. So I guessed it'll be about 3-5 degrees more? I put them side by side on 2 Dragons and it's obvious.

I want to buy the widest lens for the 6k sensor so I looked at the Voightlander 12mm f:5.6 and that is rated at 121 degrees (If you know a wider one without barrel distortion please tell me! I'm aware of the 8R etc these are over my budget now).

Can somebody tell me if the above Voightlander 12mm will be wider or much wider than the Tokina?

On top of that B&H claims that: and provides a focal length equivalent to 17-25mm in 35mm format. So according to BH the Tokina has a narrower angle of view than the Nikon 15mm but that's clearly off by far!

I understand this is Phil's territory ;-)

Thanks!

Lakis, a 12mm will always be a 12mm regardless of the image circle (sensor size) it is designed to cover. So if you set your Tokina to 12mm, it will have the same magnification and look the same as the Voightlander 12mm when viewed on the same sensor. Similarly, if you set your Tokina to 15mm, it will look the same as the Nikon 15mm when viewed on the same sensor.

However, you may want to check the vignetting on the Tokina because I believe it vignettes from 11-13mm at 6KFF.

Ok . Thanks Julio! That's clear enough. My question now is:
Is the Voightlander considered the widest lens without barrel distortion? Or anyone knows of a wider lens on a price range of less than 5k?

Hi Lakis. For general use, it's not recommended to go wider than 24-35mm with a Leica M mount lens on a RED camera. The wider lenses will work, but will have visual aberrations that will have to be corrected or used for effect.

The following examples show the vignetting and colour shifts that occur, due to the rear lens element sitting too close to the sensor, when using the Voigtlander 12 and 21mm lenses (physically modified to fit) on a Scarlet MX.

Thank Les!
I looked at the links that you send and I liked them all and especially the last one. Yes, I'm aware of the CA.
I ordered the Voightlander 12mm and the Leica mount.
The lens appears to be better and wider than the Tokina 11-16mm at 12mm. I'll find out soon.
It also appears to have less CA that I can fix to an "acceptable" degree with the EFX plugin for AFX and also the Linhof/Schneider Center Filter 3.
