  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Angenieux

Angies go through a lot of quality control and I believe are handmade which results in less artifacts in the final image. Chromatic aberration, purple fringing, if the image is sharp from center to the outer edge, that kind of stuff. Practically, you can shoot a film with CP2s or Canon CN Primes and not notice too much of a difference your first time out. When you shoot with more and more lens sets, you start to see the small differences. If you are doing vFX work, you want less artifacts.

Take a look at the SALT tests. Especially our recent SALT III: High Speed Lens Shootout where you can see the lenses in action and download samples to play with.

The difference is also speed. The Angie are usually T2.8 which is about the fastest they make zoom lenses. The CP2s are one stop faster, which equals doubled the amount of light and a shallower depth of field. The Canon CN Primes are even faster. Follow the link above, you'll see.

I am curious what i special about Angeniux lenses vs others? (not saying there isnt anything). debating against a few CP2s or Canon CN primes or a Angie zoom, as a set of first cinema lenses.

Angenieux DP "Rouge" 16-42mm and 30-80mm. If you want a single lens, the Fujinon 19-90 tested very well. Then there is the new Canon 30-300 which could be incredible and start to take some business away from the king of zooms lenses the Angie 24-290.

The DP lenses, like the 30-80 and 15-45 or something.

I have the 16-42, 30-80 and the 45-120. I love the 30-80 for narrative work.

Yes I bounced around LA a month ago and thought the 15-45 lenses by several manufacturers were neat but could find myself never taking a 30-80 lens off the camera. compared against some of the zeiss cp zooms and even the canons the angie was comparably priced if not cheaper. some of those canon lenses run around 42k which i couldnt do.
