I’m interested in opinons about the Angenieux EZ zooms, and how they compare to the Optimo DP zooms. I can pick up an Optimo DP 16-42 in excellent condition in the UK for £7500, and the EZ 15-40 set in s35 mode for £8500.

Weighing them against each other, on paper:

T2 vs T2.8 – I’ve seen the posts about the EZ actually being more like t2.4, but this is still a huge bonus. If t2 is excessively soft compared to t2.8, then this becomes more limiting
Image circle – slightly larger on the DP, more sensor coverage on red
Build Quality – not such a concerned for an owner operator as a rental house, but is it good enough?
Expansion – huge bump in favour of the EZ, the DP can’t use extensions, the EZ on the other hand can be ordered with a VV rear block at T3, or it can be used with other rear expanders (ie Tokina 1.6x)
Angenieux “look” – does the EZ line intercut with Optimos well enough

So, whittling it all down I’m leaning towards the EZ but I’m left with a concern that only a lens test will resolve (excuse the pun). I’m planning to test some EZs against some t2.6 Optimos at a rental house, in order to compare – I realise the t2.6 lenses are the crem-de-la-crem of Angenieux a goodness, so thought they should allow me to see if I like the EZ image as much. They don’t have DPs to compare.

I wondered what others opinions are on these lenses. Would you go for an Optimo DP for £7.5k or and EZ s35 for £8.5k?

15-40 has a great look, but the geometry on the edges leaves something to be desired and the amount of light it lets in changes almost zero from 2.8 to 2.

I’m personally not a fan of the EZ. Take a hard look at the Angenieux “style” line

Geometry is a good point I had forgotten to consider! I’ll be bsure to test this.

The style lenses look fantastic, unfortunately I can’t find any good used deals, and new they are more like £13.5k which puts them out of budget at the moment.

I just bought the EZ1/EZ2 set. Great lenses that have a super high performance for dollar spend. What camera are you using? The only lens that Angenieux has which will cover the image circle of Helium or Monstro is the EZ... Everything else in the range will vignette...

Cine- und Cine Modded Lens comparison at zumirent.ch

By Foto Video Zumstein

In this lens test we compare different Cine lenses with Cine Mods and high quality photo lenses. The idea behind this test was to deepen my knowledge about the different lenses from the zumirent.ch range for myself. Hopefully this test will help you to find the right look for your next film project.
The camera used for all shots is a Sony PXW-FS5 MK II. With this camera it was possible to use PL, EF and E-Mount lenses. By the integrated Vario-ND more or less the exposure could be kept immediately. No corrections were made regarding brightness, color or contrast.
Especially in the outdoor shots a big difference concerning color and contrast between the different lenses can be seen very clearly.

The test is always carried out in the same way. First, if available, aperture 1.4 then 2.0 or a similar value and finally aperture 5.6.

For the indoor shots a sharpness drive was made from the tube (1) to the eyes (2), to the background (3) and then back to the eyes (4). Finally, a back light source (5) runs from right to left through the picture.

In the outdoor shots, a focus drive of 1m distance (1), to the eyes (2), to the background (3) and then back to the eyes (4) was made.

The following lenses were used for this test:
