Having seen the Angenieux ONCE, I have fallen in love.

Now I see the "Complementary version of Optimo 24-290, Optimo 24-340 has been specially designed for an image coverage up to 31.4 mm diagonal for a perfect compatibility with all S35 Film and Digital cameras – full frame 5K format of Epic among others."

I ask myself, is she better for the epic? How do the optic's compare, exactly the same, just reconfigured slightly for the epic? It's slightly slower, which is a bummer, does the 290 not work for 5kFF?

Anyone have a chance to test this new beauty?

BTW, I'm looking to get my hands on one of these lenses to do dirty, dirty things. If your love affair has ended with yours, PM me and maybe we can work something out.

The 24-290 is not meant to have a full 31.4mm image circle; only for the super35 image circle. The updated lens is designed to cover that full image circle. In doing so, they had to give up a bit of stop and some of the wide end. Basically they are using a very mild teleconverter that was specifically designed for the 12x.

actually a 28-340.

the original 24-290 works beautifully on the Epic...use it everyday.
There is a slight vignette on wide end at 5k. 4k is no problem.

There is a slight vignette on wide end at 5k.

at what point on the wide do you get full resolution? 35mm or somewhere close? So what happens when we get the dragon 6k? the lens becomes a 44mm-290?mm

Around 38mm I think.

According to the guys at IBC it's not just a tweak to cover 5K but a complete redesign - optics sharp edge to edge where the 24-290 was sharper at the centre and dropped off at the edges.

If already in the market for the 24-290, does it seem like a risky decision to buy the newer glass untested or reviewed by the majority? Maybe wait till some folks put it through it's paces?

I'm sure the 28-340 is just as good as the 24-290. If you're looking to purchase now for any gigs coming up, the 24-290 is fool-proof as we all know. Beautiful lens.
It vignettes to around 33mm a little in 5K and perfect in 4K. No one really uses 24-33mm much on these lenses anyway. It hasn't bothered me since owning one.

I also have one for sale.
