Hello everyone

I'm one of many new Red Users thanks to the BT Red One sale

I've been wondering, has anyone ever used this Angenieux lens on their cameras?
I know that this being a 16mm lens it should cover 2K on the R1 but I was wondering, has anyone used this with a 1.5x or 2x extender?
If so were you pleased with the results? I know there are later models with High Efficiency Coatings but I'm talking about the one without it.

I ask this because like many who got on the BT R1 deal, not having that much money left for lenses, I was looking into 16mm or S16mm zoom lenses with an extender to cover the R1 at 4.5K and serve as a multipurpose lens for now.
Even if you don't know this lens, if anyone does have experience with other 16 or S16 lenses with extenders (a la Kubrick) on their RED cameras please share, it would be a great help.

Again thank you guys for a great community.

2K on the Red One is likely to be an image size more like Super16mm than the original 16mm image size. Older lenses engineered for original 16mm may vignette on Super16mm or the Red One at 2K.

Here's a list of Super16mm partially or completely compatable 16mm older lenses.

http://www.cinematechnic.com/resources/optics_for_super-16.html

I did not see the 9.5mm-57mm in the list. I suspect it will vignette at wide. An older 12mm-120mm and 10mm-150mm Angenieux 16mm lenses vignettes wide, clears at about 15mm then crops in again between 25mm and 35mm give or take.

You may achieve a better outcome using a new-old-stock Angenieux 17.5mm-70mm from Whitehouse AV.

The SI2K does not vignette the 17.5-75 lens. The pixel count is 2048x1156 and they are five micron pixels. Whether the RED samples the same area at 2K I do not know. Others wiser than I may inform you. I have seen RED footage with this lens on vimeo. It was posted by a Red One owner who was selling the lens. I think it was some time back. I could no longer find it. I have a test on vimeo with the 17.5-75 lens shot with the SI2K. You will observe that with focus trims, the 17.5-75 breathes.

It was my impression that the Red One at 2K was 16mm, not S16mm. I have a feeling you'll be ok. With a 2x doubler you will def cover 2K and more than likely 3K.

I know that an Angy 12-240 with a doubler covers Micro 4/3ds, which has a 3k FOV.

Thank you for all the information so far.

Allow me to make a new question to everyone then,

Are there any 16mm or S16mm Zooms out there that you've used that could cover the Red One in 4.5K WS with an extender such as 1.6X or 2X, at least at most focal distances?

I think you will find this not to be worth the trouble. You will end up with a slightly softer t4 lens that might cover 4.5k. I used to have this lens and it blooms a bit at t1.8 so it would need to be stopped down to at least t2 and then you lose 2 stops with the extender.

Another issue is that pl mount extenders can be expensive and the version I had of this lens had elements protruding from the pl mount making it incompatible with the extenders I was able to find.

You would be better off with zeiss zf primes, nikon zooms (17-35, 28-70, and 80-200 which are the older d series with aperture rings).

Agreed. Stills lenses with a Nikon mount (easy to put on Red One) probably best way to go for 4.5k coverage and speed. Those Nikon Zooms are all 2.8.

I have the Angie 9.5-57 and used it successfully on the R1 in 2K. It produced excellent images. Haven't tried it on my Epic yet to see how well it works with the larger sensor.

I actually had the zooms until recently. You can get the 80-200 for $1000 new, 28-70 for about $1300 used, and the 17-35 for about 1,800 new. Thats a total of about $4100 for the set.

For a little more you could pick up a zeiss zf 50mm 2.0, 35mm 1.4, and 25mm 2.0 which could get you started.

It is no doubt a great specialty lens for highspeed windowed shots but I don't think its suitable as a primary lens for his camera.

I hope it didn't sound like I thought it would work as a primary lens. The OP asked if anybody had used it and if it worked for 2K on the R1. I have and it does. I don't think anyone should consider 2K as the primary format for the R1. If price is an issue, SLR lenses are a good option. For the price of the 9.5-57mm, you could buy several Nikon AI or AI-S primes on ebay or KEH that would allow the use of the full resolution of the camera.

Thank you for your advice everyone.

You're right it does sound like too much trouble just to make it cover the full sensor.

Still lenses really might be the best option for me right now, will keep checking the "Red stuff for sale" section here for Red Nikon or Optitek Nikon ProLock mounts.

Again thanks for everything guys.

you didn't make it sound that way but I think the original post was asking for that seeing as how they were asking about it covering the full sensor with an extender and that they didn't have much for lenses so they needed one that would be multipurpose. I think he is right to go with still lenses. I had still zooms but will be going the prime mount so that I can get ones that are all manual.
