Hello!

Up for sale I have an Angenieux 7-81mm PL mount cinema lens, which comes with an optional 2x Universal Mount extender, which is shimmed to the lens, and expands the coverage from Super 16 to a 14-162mm in Super 35.

Here's what you get:

- Angenieux 7-81mm HR Lens

Zoom Ratio: 11.5x
Aperture: f2.2
Photometric: T2.4 (7-50), T.35 (50-81)
Close Focus: 1'9", 0.6m
Weight: 3.9lbs, 1.8kg
Length: 9.75in, 24.75cm
Front Diameter: 100mm / 95mm threaded

- Motor mount bracket on the lens with clamp
- A&J lens hard case with custom foam
- 2x Universal Mount to Universal Mount extender (Optex)

The Angenieux 7-81mm lens itself is one of, if not the best Super 16 zoom ever made. It is incredibly sharp in both acutance and contrast and is very well corrected for chromatic aberration. It's wide (20mm full frame equivalent) while still being reasonably fast at T2.4 (f2.2). It also doesn't ramp (change in T stop exposure) until 50mm (140mm full frame equivalent). After that point it is T3.5 until 81mm (230mm full frame equivalent).

Here's what Mitch Gross had to say about the lens in comparison to Cooke's Super 16 lens:

"Fantastic lens! A bit heavy and expensive, but I'd consider it significantly superior to the Cooke. Very sharp, great edge to edge brightness and resolution. Very good in color and contrast. A slight amount of pincusioning at the wide end, which is to be expected with such a range. The only place I'd consider the Cooke superior is in focus breathing. The Cooke has none and the Ang. has very little."

Another thing that's great about this lens is that it is probably the most telecentric out of all of the Super 16 zoom lenses, meaning that it works great with digital, which responds best when light is funneled in more of a straight line.

Now onto the Super 35 modification:

The Angenieux 7-81, like most Angenieux and Cooke lenses, has a universal sub mount, which the PL mount screws on to. You can remove the PL mount relatively easy, exposing the universal mount underneath. The Optex 2x doubler, being universal mount to universal mount, simply screws onto the existing universal mount. It has a universal mount itself, and you can just screw the PL mount to that.

The benefit to this (instead of just a PL to PL extender) is that the 2x extender becomes more of a integrated (it's very securely attached) part of the lens, while still being able to be removed when needed.

The universal mount 2x doubler that comes with this lens was made by Optex. The glass used in the doubler is the exact same used in the Century and Schneider PL 2x doublers and is Nikon in origin. Regarding these specific doublers, Matthew Duclos said that these are the "go to extender for rental houses" and that they "would be a good option in regards to quality."

I sent the lens to Bernie O'Doherty of Super16Inc (he's the Duclos of the East Coast) along with two extenders that I had. He picked out the nicest one optically and shimmed it to match the lens perfectly and also made sure it was able to be mounted and unmounted without effecting the parfocal nature of the lens.

Using this lens with the 2x extender, it becomes a 14-100mm at a constant T4.8. If you want to use it past that, it will ramp to T7.0 till 162mm. It is going to be slower than most Super 35 zooms, but it is also going to be way more compact for the range you're getting.

As for the image itself - the bare lens is amazingly sharp. The 2x doubler does removes some of the sharpness, but it still performs great. With the doubler the image also warms up just a bit and it reminds me a bit more of a Cooke zoom.

Coverage wise, with the 2x you'll be at 29.1mm, which covers all 5K formats on Epic Dragon, and is more than enough for Super 35 (All the Sony S35 cameras, C500, Alexa/Amira in regular 16x9, etc.) It will also fully cover the new 4.6k sensor for the Blackmagic Ursa.

Also, with the bare lens, most of the range has an image circle above 15mm. Plus, if you're not focused as close as possible, the image circle opens a bit more. For almost all of the range with the 2x, therefore, there would be enough coverage for 5.5K HD and WS on Epic Dragon.

Since this is a zoom lens, there is also additional coverage as you zoom in. At about 26mm on the lens (52mm doubled), you'll get about 16.66mm of coverage (covers GH4 UHD) with the bare lens (or 33.32mm of coverage with the doubler - which is Dragon 6K WS.) At about 30mm (60mm doubled), you'll get about 17.36mm of coverage (covers GH4 4K) with the bare lens (34.72mm coverage doubled - Dragon 6K FF). Zooming in a bit more gives you Blackmagic Cinema coverage (18.13mm) and 16x9 m4/3 coverage is there on the long end (19.83mm). These figures were measured at f5.6 on the lens, focused as close as possible, so you'll reach this coverage sooner if you don't focus as closely.

Optically and mechanically the lens is in great shape and there are no scratches on the lens. (Note that the specs you see on the exterior on the front lens is due to an internal ring that is supposed to catch internal dust.)

I would recommend the lens to be serviced before usage, though. The rings, while smooth and dampened, have just a teensy or barely perceptible bit of lash, and there is a grease film on one of the internal lenses on the Angenieux. The film can be simply cleaned off during the next service, and it currently has no effect on the image, except when light (like the sun) shines directly into the lens. You cannot see it otherwise (I tested the lens on a $1,500 DSC Labs 4K resolution chart and Bernie threw it up on his optical bench.) I was going to have Bernie service and clean the lens (including removing the grease film) but I figured the buyer might want to sent it to their own lens guy, so I left it as is for now. If you don't have anyone you work with, though, I can send the lens to Bernie myself and have him clean it, delivering the lens freshly serviced to your door. Just let me know if you want to do that (it will just be an extra $350, I'll cover anything above that).

I'm pricing the lens combo at $5,750 plus actual shipping (the case is bit heavy). Feel free to send an offer as well. :)

Thanks!
