  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

and another thing...

Just wait.

Jim is playing this very much like a street hustler.

You saw him put a ball under that cup, he showed you how the cups move. You are focused on that cup. You "know" there is a ball under that cup. In the mean time who knows what he has put under the other cups.

I am not so sure about a floating compression level. I guess you suggest this for a world where the selection would always be perfectly suitable for the frames, but it would complicate things and open up the possibility for subtle differences in the image... I would say no... though I guess this sort of thing would be sweet if it could be turned on deep in the menus by someone shooting for 480, 720, docu, etc... but let them focus on other stuff for now. :)

USlatin, quite the reverse.

Software would float the RC based on image complexity in real time.

The subtle image differences you would notice would be the lack of compression artifacts that you get when compression cant handle the detail.

This is not a concern for people shooting lower rez material (480, 720, docu) with red one. Its of paramount concern for people trying to achieve the highest quality possible in the most difficult circumstances while conserving media space. Think chroma key, low-light, off chip colour balance to 4K cinematic projection. Worst case scenario.

Oh yea baby... that thing would be TINY. 3 cards and RAID-5 already sounds great... but would it keep up with the fastest possible cards? It is so affordable also! Either way, someone has to be able to make this thing mount like a Red Drive. Do you get two cards worth of space in a 3 card RAID-5? If so you'd get 128GB and almost any 64's would do in terms of speed for RR36!

Just give us a nice case with screws every time bigger and faster cards come out. And locks on the cards so they don't jump out.

something like this for the cover

With Cf card proving to be extremely reliable, I don get why everyone is pushing those devices to be in protective mode raid 1 or 5; seams like waste of space and speed.
I never had one CF card failing on me...

Buy more Lexar 8GB UDMA 300X cards... Just lost another one on monday, that makes my Lexar body count at 6 cards now in 10 months. Two of which were DOA right out of the box. I tend to buy quite a few of them every time there is a rebate or deal. Right now they're about $50 after rebate so I've bought a bunch of them, tend to use them mostly for DSLR shooting, but they also work with RED. I cycle lots of them since I tend to hand them over to clients with images on them a lot of times. I don't know if it was one of my new ones I bought last week or an older one that failed, I wasn't tracking that.

The card failed while in my Nikon D2Xs. Can't write to the card anymore on any device, Mac or PC. Was able to recover all but two images, one came off corrupt, the other wouldn't read. Attempted to format card, which cleared the FAT and zeroed out the card, or seems to, but won't mount on any device now. Junk. Sending card back for replacement today.

I've had more of these Lexar cards fail than any other kind. It's weird. Other than that, I've had a DOA card once from Transcend...

If the RED team starts rolling out cameras next year, they might be able to implement SATA III (6 gbps) right from the beginning. That would position the Monstro cameras well for potential SSD RAID arrays next year, which is projected by many tech enthusiasts to be a year of the SSD (if the economy rebounds somewhat, at least).

Plus, if CF cards do reach their maximum throughput of ~120MBps, a nice RAID array of those would do nicely. We'll see where Pretec's 666x card benchmarks and how it's priced, but it should be plenty fast. Then there's CFast on the horizon.

I don't think we'll have to worry about raw throughput requirements as much as price / workflow considerations.

Still... all to often productions spend more in minutes that it would take to buy a 4 x 7200 RAID. A wasted card or two plus a little gear for the raid would be an investment to small to ignore.

How about making it a pair of these 2 card RAID-0s! That way you have speed, use four cards, have two copies, and two RAID boards. This would provide the most safety and you could still make them as big as the current Red RAM or Red Drive.

Oh my... Has anyone opened up a Red RAM? Look at the price, then look at what I just described would cost now. :nerd: Could it be? Not too far.

I wonder if this is the sort of thing that Red wouldn't want to make modular in the interest of making their money back... provide cameras you can't resist, get you hooked on having to upgrade your media to keep up with the ever increasing resolutions, bit rates, etc... Probably not. I hope not... cause I would love a little "upgradeable" 4 CF double RAID0.

hmmmmmmmmmmm

hmmmmmmmmmmm

Hmmmmmmmmmm... what? I'm not the only one having problems with the Lexar cards. Weird, I know, because most evidence points to the RED cards being Lexar cards as well. Other than this latest casualty, all the other Lexar problem cards have been problems right out of the package. And this may be the case with this latest faulty card, too. I just unpacked it and threw it in the case with a bunch of others, so I don't know for sure which one failed, old or brand new and it's one of 3 I ordered last week. It's like they occasionally have a bad production run here and there. RED cards probably go through a tougher QC screening and that's probably part of what we pay for with the higher price.

Perhaps it is bad luck... But I buy so many CF cards, lots, probably over a hundred over the past year. Most for DSLR and other uses, not so much for RED. But lately I just buy the Lexar cards so I can use them with anything, including RED. Still the failure rate is very low. Way lower than just about any other type of memory or storage media and they're cheap, so I keep buying. I test all cards a couple times when I prep for a shoot. Haven't had any problems in a critical situation. I've said it before in previous threads on this topic, test your cards well before putting them into service. I didn't follow my own advice this last week and I'm really thinking that one of the new cards was a dud. Because I haven't had any cards actually go bad while actually being used, except for this one, it's the first. But if it was one of the new ones, it would've been it's first use, meaning it was DOA right out of the package.

Just some info to chew on, I guess...
