  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

and another thing...

More the falloff issue than the sharpness, but yes, you are correct.

Jim likes to hint and let you figure it out for yourself, but I figured there was enough confusion that it was simpler to spell it out. You're welcome Mr. Jannard. ;-)

So FF35 will be one lean mean S35 machine!

I can only pray that I get to use one of those... I am a bit daunted by the sound of RR100 but it can't be all that bad... can it?

Spell it out, Mitch. Please.

EDIT: Hints are cool and all, but just give it to us straight. Please. Thank you for taking the time to elucidate, Mitch.

More on the 30mm x 15mm Area

More on the 30mm x 15mm Area

The question is; does the lens cover the S35 Epic Mysterium-x sensor size which is 30mm x 15mm? The answer is; yes it does, it covers a 31mm diameter! That was definitely answered by Mitch.

A second question was does it do-it without any resolution fall out? I think the answer is; I depends on the lens, the higher the quality of the glass, the less it will do-it. Those are pretty much the questions, what happens whiting the frame is up to us, now we’re are just taking about the S35 Epic Mysterium-x sensor size.

Assumption

Assumption

Let’s say that the 24.9mm x 13.46mm gives us a 1:85 frame inside a S35 Epic Mysterium-x sensor, and that the diameter of the angle coverage of the Arri Master prime lenses area is 31mm. With that assumption, and using a multiplier of 1.2, then the frame size would be 29.88mm x 16.152mm.

Now if we put this lens in an FF35 frame, which is 36mm x 24mm, we have plenty of ‘look-around’ room for the 31mm diameter of the lens for such things as mikes and whatever, we can still use as safe area for a 2:35 coverage, we have the benefit of one more stop over the S35 Epic Mysterium-x sensor, and two over the R1 sensor. The 16-bit A/D is also in play, all well within the Arri Master Prime or any other lens that meets those requirements.

Again, just thinking out-loud.

I am sorry Humberto if I am mistaking what you meant on your first post, but I seriously doubt that the new Red Primes won't cover their own S35 flavor without any noticeable falloff. This is exactly what Jim seems to be hinting... though I think he only said edge to edge sharpness... can't remember if he spelled it out about the falloff. But this lens set is one of the big kahunas of their product list. My guess is that they partly depend on them to make the numbers the will probably need to break even in terms of camera sales.

I would guess... (I am not an accomplished DP/Shooter/etc...) that it will probably be barely measurable, if at all. Definitely at worst VERY hard to notice on a gray board. After all these are their Pro Cinema Primes.

Am I being too optimistic? I just look at Red one and its price, consider it's release, then it is hard to read what Jim says about the lenses and not expect an other shocker.

Roberto, I’m just thinking out-loud; first the 1:85 is OK in the S35 Epic Mysterium-x sensor! I’m not sure on the FF35 till we get more information on the Master Prime, and what Jim has in-stored for his lenses, so like always we have to wait to get more information.

I would be daunted if RC100 was actually 100MBs. Since... there isn't any reliable way to record that in a super compact system inexpensively yet. But I suspect it's probably going to be in the 40-60MB range.

I'm far more excited about the added data than worried about the recording medium. Especially because most of the times I would need RC100 would be when I had a RAID close at hand.

Maybe RC100 is what the mysterious GigE port is for.

Bandwidth on the Run

Bandwidth on the Run

I am hopeful that the RedTeam is tracking on an on board recording solution that can handle data rates of 80MB/sec. Perhaps a SSD implementation that stripes data at RAID 0 across CF cards, sort of P2 on steroids  .

Just spitballin' in terms of the architecture but based on the preliminary specs for the new rigs - higher frame rates at higher resolutions with less compression - they'll need some serious bandwidth.

Now riddle me this - if they could implement a small, lightweight recording media that could actually handle 150MB/sec (seems unlikely but so did a 4K camera for under $20K not that long ago) would very many people want to deal with that much data?

64MG CF card

64MG CF card

Pretec has unveiled the world's first 666x Compact Flash cards with a read/write speed of 100MB/s. According to the company, this is approaching the format's maximum theoretical speed of 133MB/s, and the end of ever-increasing CF card speeds is now in sight. Sporting a rugged body and resistant to shock and impact, they promise to be ten times more durable that other CF cards. The 666x CF cards will start shipping from April, with capacities ranging from 4GB to 64GB.

If these CF cards can work on the Red Cameras, that might be the one of the options.

666x CF cards....
The Devil is in the Data...

Seriously, small portable raid 0 is easy with 2.5 solid state drives (2x60Gig?).
If RED can implement it in a DSMC/EPIC form factor, then thats "the bees knees".
Very high data widths can be supported when required.

What would be "epic" is if the module or brain could actively change the RC in real time when things get hairy. You know, back-lit trees waving in the wind, f8 24mm scenic establishing pans or aerials. I have no idea how this could be achieved or if it could. With a floating RC, relatively simple images would require little memory, but you've got access to it when things get rough, saving memory and preserving image fidelity.

The problem with implementing it into the form factor is service, upgrading, RAID failure, etc. Keeping it separate saves a lot of hassle etc.

Having a SSD RAID as a module would be a better option and even then if the drives could be removed in a drive carriage together (to keep the RAID built) and with a USB2.0 or USB 3.0 or Firewire connection on the drive carriage for NLE/Archive ingest.

Well, as a module, DSMC, the drives are ejectable, the unit/chassis is replaceable, the Raid card is upgradeable, the device is inexpensive, fits into a modular system...

Separate modules mean cables, power supplies. Fine in studio but in field a pain in the ass in many situations. Car rigs, handheld, steadycam, helis, para, diving etc etc. Yet all of these would benefit from access to lower compression on demand.

I think it is important to design gear like this not only for what is possible now, but also what we should be able to do in the future. Storage is only going to get smaller and faster.

It is great that some of Red's specs are unattainable right now. They are doing the right thing.

No no no modules do not mean more cables and power supplies. Look at the other modules.

Keeping it separate saves a lot of hassle etc.

I think we have misunderstood each other.
In my original post I envisioned the unit as a CINE module not unlike every other module RED has proposed. In fact it would look exactly like the dual slot module they have shown.

I believe you think I was suggesting that it be part of the DSMC Brain module. I assure you I am not.

When you wrote, "keeping it separate saves a lot of hassle" I believed you were implying "as an independent unit".

We are on the same page I believe...

If CF cards have a read/write speed limit, how are they gonna work with Epic? All of the Epics are Redcodes 225-500
