  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

and another thing...

this thread is going to get very interesting over the next couple days :)

You couldn't have said anything more exciting. My heart is racing.

Any word on their coverage? I know that they won't do 8-perf full-frame, but will they cover 18mm x 24mm? Not high on my list, more curious than anything else. Even the S35's 15mm x 30mm size is unusual... will the primes cover the full sensor?

Probably the closest thing to an answer to your questions was given by Jim Jannard this morning on the thread announcing the new primes. He was asked repeatedly if the new primes would cover FF35. On His Post #95, on Page 10 of the thread he responded: "no to FF35".

I would assume they would be S35 since that is around what the Red One sensor is and it seems like they completely intend for us to use these lenses with the Red One.

Sure, its a given that they would cover S35. What many on the other thread were curious about is if they would also cover FF35, most likely because they were hoping to use them on a FF35 Epic or Scarlet they are planning to buy. The answer to their question on that was "no".

...And also no to /i data.

While I would have been ecstatic if they covered FF35, it doesn't impact my decision to buy the set. The price and specs are just too good to pass up, can't wait to put these up against some Ultra Primes.

As for FF35 coverage, the more I think about it, the upcoming electronic lenses are probably a much better choice. With the larger sensor area, cine-style lenses would grow larger as well, it's going to be nice to have some form of focus assist, electronic feedback, etc.. Anyway, exciting stuff for sure.

Definitely Jeff...besides covering FF35, for some of us the info given on 12/3 that the RED Electronic Lenses will feature auto focus and and stabilization is huge. That, along with the 12/3 announcement that the new mounts (RED, Nikon, Canon) feature power and electronic data interfaces, has my serious attention.

Everything is subject to change, but I hope all those features stay with the mounts and RED Electronic Lenses. :gun:

But I'll also be buying certain individual lenses of the new primes - probably the 18mm and 14mm when they're ready. For the genres I shoot, zooms are mostly used, and the primes I use are usually very wide or very long in focal length.

As I posted earlier in this thread, way cool on the T1.8 achievement RED Team...you guys rock!

Here is my thought.

If I'm shooting FF35 I'm probably wanting a lightweight lens not a cine lens capable of covering FF35 and weighing 8 pounds. A lighter weight eZoom fits much better into the hybrid stills/travel camera rig.

If I'm shooting cine I'm probably just doing a S35 crop anyway and I'll be renting a box of primes.

If I'm just messing around I'll probably be shooting S35 with an old 10:1 PL mount.

I'm not terribly concerned about the coverage on the Red primes because I don't see myself wanting to shoot FF35 when I would have them at hand. The exception being VFX shots in which case I won't be zooming and I'll be in controlled stage conditions such that a really nice stills lens would probably work best anyway.

Very very impressive.

next week i will be shooting a short film on REDONE for the first time
any advise on frame rate 24 or 25 wish one is better for post and latter video projection

I'm happy to announce that every single lens hit the original goal... the 25mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm are all true T1.8.

This may be a small thing, but I hope it points to our effort to be conservative in our announcements.

I am very proud of the lens team and what they have accomplished.

Jim

It's not small!!! It's big! As soon as you talk about T stop 0,1 is something!!
And you're right to be proud...

Any tech info like close focus weight etc??... Maybe I missed it...

Thank you for the terrific job!
Antoine
