Hi
I am sure this has been asked before, but did not have time to search and search, just need feedback on this lens, good buy or not? My camera is here, but as everyone one knows the Red lenses are months out, at least for me.

I got the Nikon mount to use my other glass, but am looking for a good versatile cine Zoom for the short and long term

Thanks
Ron

Excellent lens.

Thanks Mitch
Then I think I will order today and hope delivery is quick

I really love this lens, sharp and light weight. can't wait to get a hold on the 16-42mm.

Can anyone compare it to RED 18-85 ?
I have paid in full the RED lens, but still not sure if it's a way to go. Any word of encouragement ?

José

I can't really compare the two in quality because I haven't seen either one.

However, I'm not to crazy about the focal length on both Optimo Lenses. But that's just me.

Agree with you on focal length... it needs the 16-42mm as complement.

But if that's required to reduce the weight, I'll consider it.

José

However the wider zoom will start delivery on June 09 (at least in this part of world)

you are talking apples and oranges. get both. the RED's focal length is nice, but that's if you plan to have it on a dolly all day. personally, i like to shoot a lot hand held or on steadycam, so i would have no use for the RED. i have the 30-80 and the focal length is perfect, if you have another lens on the wide side. i have the 16-42 on order, but for now i am using the century 17-35, a really compact lens. the 30-80 is very sharp, which is a good thing most of the time. if you are getting just one, get the red, or better yet, the cooke 18-100. it looks really great with the RED camera, it takes down a little the sharp video look. but if budget is an issue, there is no better deal out there than the RED 18-85, when it finally delivers. by the way, i happen to know that birns and sawyer had a cooke 18-100 that they where thinking of selling, not cheap, but a later edition and in really great shape. i don't know if they still are selling it, i think they put it on rental now, but they might. you can ask.

as for me, the angenieux 30-80, 16-42 when available, and 25-290 when i hit the lottery. i can always rent a set of fast primes when needed.

If your comment is in regards to my question of comparing to RED 18-85mm, think you misunderstood the question.

I already have the Optimo DP 30-80, I like it so much. The 16-42mm is also in order. The thing is I already paid in full the RED 18-85, and since I know the quality of Optimo already, hence the question about comparison in quality to people who already test both of them, as an encouragement/knowledge whether to have the RED deliver or not.

I agree with Lenny's comments.
If weight is not an issue for you, you should look for a second hand 18-100 Cooke. That's a very nice lens and it matches perfectly with the S4 primes. Cooke should consider making a new batch of that lens for the Red One.

are you saying used cooke 18-100 is better than the RED 18-85 ?

still need info whether to continue with the RED 18-85 or not... been waiting roughly 2 years for this lens.

The 18-100 Cooke is a proven lens, it may be 15 to 20 years old but it's still used for a lot of shootings. The 17-80 Angenieux is newer an faster, but it's a very expensive glass.

the red 18-85 is very sharp, if you get a good sample. some hold focus better than others. but, if you have waited that long in line for it, and you will be taking delivery soon, i say get it. you can't beat the price, and, if you decide you don't like it, i think you will be able to get your money back here, if not even a little more for it. there are a lot of people wanting it.

thanks Lenny

Not sure when I'm going to get it, but RED stated that they're making 50 unit / month, so it should be this December.

i would grab it the moment i can, if i was you. if you don't like it, list it here, you will get plenty of takers. maybe even me. that price is hard to beat. a good 18-100, clean sample, inside and out, the best that i found, they where asking $18,000, and yes, some people like it better, but the RED, if you get a good sample, is nothing to sneeze at, and for almost half the price. you can always put a soft filter in front of it if you think it's to sharp.
