So this last thursday I went out and shot some tests using some russian anamorphic lenses provided by Hunter Richards' and I thought I'd provide a couple of samples below. Overall I really like how the character of the lenses adds to the over all feel when shooting on the Red. All of the artifacts really look great IMO. Hopefully I'll be able to shoot a project on them soon!

Right now I'm still working out the best workflow with FCP and Color- I want to get the highest resolution possible, but it is a little tricky since Color makes a lot of choices for you when it come to image size.

Anyway, here are the shots:

Build 20, in 4k ANA Mode:

Build 20, in 4k 16:9 (a 3.55:1 image)

Both of these where shot with a 35mm lens.

Here is a short little flare test I did using the 35mm / 50mm / 75mm lenses:

Vimeo 1080p: http://www.vimeo.com/5482514 (Will be ready for viewing in about 30 minutes form now.)

Yep round front. :)

Yep, there is something special about them! :)

Those flairs look really high dollar Hunter. Beautiful. When I shoot in Portland again I'll give you a call.

Just for comparison... Here's the link to a flair from my 35mm Square Front circa 1966... a lot more old school...

Lomo Round Fronts = New Star Trek
Lomo Square Fronts = Logan's Run

Is that fair to say???

Hunter, what year are your lenses? 90's???

I think that is fair to say. I like the characteristics from both the round front and the square front, but if I had to choose, I like the older feel of the square fronts better. Not that I don't like these round fronts- I REALLY like them, there is just something different about those square fronts...

The grass is always greener.. I was thinking about how much I liked the round fronts... although the mechanics of the square fronts are rough... even post Duclos "there's just lots of stuff that moves around in there.

Can't wait for FF and some proper anamorphic DOF

Thanks for posting your tests.

Hey Kip-

The 50mm and 75mm are late 90's and the 35mm is from the 80's I believe. I agree- the square front flare is a lot more "in your face" than the round fronts. I would have a set of both if I could find a set of square fronts with decent mechanics!

Ryan,

All your stuff on Vimeo is off the hook. What lenses do you use?

How do you grade the footage?

Thanks for checking out this and the other clips on Vimeo, I appreciate it, and I'm glad you liked it. :)

Lens flares were shot with Russian Round Front Lomo Lenses (35mm / 50mm / 75mm).

The Alaska Skycrane was shot with the Red 18 - 50mm.

All of the test footage with the good looking girl was shot with an older Zeiss 85mm prime.

The Bridge short and the Walking Through Worlds Teaser were shot with Zeiss C/Y lenses.

The Black Line lighting test, the white line lighting test (Bottle), Sports Promo, and Red Beauty were shot with Zeiss Nikon Mount lenses.

All of that footage was shot on the Red.

For my Reel- there are to many camera, lens, and formats combinations to list.

In regards to grading footage- I use Final Cut, so I send everything over to Color to grade.

very nice stuff you got there in your reel.
one question regarding the mounting of the lenses. did you get the lenses remountet to pl or did you hire somebody ?and if yes how much did this cost you ? and who did it. im currently researching myself becaus i got a myself the 50mm roundfront.

Thanks. :)

The Anamorphics are PL mount lenses. I'm not sure if they were refitted with PL mounts or not - they are Hunter's Lenses, and I know he had some work done to them to get them up to working condition. They are some really great lenses! I LOVE the look!!!

If anyone wants that look, I highly recommend renting them from Hunter. :)
