  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anamorphic Music Video Shot With LOMO

We are currently shooting tests with our Lomo set, really impressed considering how cheap they are.At 25 years old and originating in the Soviet era they are industrial to say the least, and you can expect every lens idiosyncracy with these, pincushion, breathing, distortion and on..but they are reasonably fast (T2.1-T3)considering age, cost etc,and because we shoot native 320 on build 16 i dont miss the stop ..besides the sweetest number is T4-5.6 and there is a noticeable shift in performance from wide open.No internal focusing means there are issues with using filters (Front lens el physically moves back and forward during focus ramps), so i have used a 10mm Neoprine "donut" to bridge the gaps created..old school style.Delron (Later Mod) focus gears on the front elements create some difficulty with the Mattbox (MB20) and FF5 clearance,so i ordered a wider gear for the FF5 to allow for this...and can now rack focus from min to infinity..and boy that is a long long way in rotations. If you want all the inherent artifacts of these lenses, then you have them...if you want the JD Xtal horizontal flare look, then you have it,and each lens is quite unique in smear behavior...beautiful.
Because these lenses are much softer than Sphericals or modern
Anamorphics they are much more forgiving, and really do give an organic
feel to our images.
I think if your a DP on a budget then you will love them and if your the 1st AC..then your going to hate them.

Ken Rich is the contact/owner of the site.If you want Anamorphic lenses then my experience with him has been fantastic.Spares for these lenses are plenty, and servicing is reasonably basic as the lens design and engineering
is pretty rudimentary which for budget shooting is ideal.I am very very fortunate as i have 2 ex "Cooke" guys in support.
Right now of course (please Red guys!!) the only option for viewing & operating (as far as i am aware) de-squeezed is a 3rd Party monitor of which there are a number of course all varying in price which have aspect ratio functions built in.

And yes there are also AJA & equivalent for Client/Director/video village viewing options.

Currently i operate un-squeezed, ok for short burst, but for long form Jobs
i will need to invest in a suitable 3rd Party......unless ........JIM?

I'm a newbie here, possibly shooting with a RED and anamorphic lenses in a few months.

Can anyone enlighten me on the "2:1 lens Anamorphic (ANA) recording modes for 2K, 3K, 4K" feature added in Build 15 in the Features by Build stickie?

Does the EVF viewfinder display an 2764x2304 image with proper guides? I understand there's no de-squeeze option – I'm just trying to get a handle on this.

Many thanks in advance!

They have my guitar.

I think Nick has redone his website so they are not on the front page but under the "video" tab.

Its also on the band's official website:

The song is called Sink Sink Swim, but have a look at Stunning as well. Also anamorphics and with the SWAT team now playing prison warders.

Both directed by Nick Bartleet of Pixelloft as posted earlier
DOP Simon Dennis
Red cameras and DIT by yours truly.

Great look. Funny that I only read the thread after watching it and I too thought of Children of Men. Great job on that.

I too might have added a few more of the stable shots to give more breaks from the extreme dynamic style, but I wouldn't have have gone too stable... simply added a few more shots like when the kid closes the door wherever they might fit.

I thought the skew worked with it and was not a problem at all. It added to it imo though I am sure there are many who fear it so much that can't so easily accept it as a VFX of sorts as easily as I did.

Thanks everyone. We have shot a few more videos since this on the red camera with anamorphic including.

Pendulum Showdown (Worth a watch)
Funeral For a Friend - Kicking and screaming.
