  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anamorphic Music Video Shot With LOMO

3K has less skew. The sensor crop is read faster. Anyway, I agree that if you're filming anamorphic you're almost short on definition for a good 2K master. 3K wouldn't help.

The other thing is that the sensor needs to be cropped on the top and bottom to make the read out faster, and thus, skew less. In anamorphic modes, it is cropped on the sides. So the max frame rate is still the same as it is for the 16:9 4K mode, which is 60p for the sensor at 4K. Even though current media only allows for 30p, or whatever it's up to now, It's the sensors max. refresh rate for the given vertical pixel height that determines how fast they can get it to read and reset the sensor.

Thanks for the comments.

I think its easy for people to confuse the slight softness and lack of detail/resolution one would expect from shooting 2k 2:1 or 16x9 and 4k anamorphic. The detail and sharpness you get from using the full height of the sensor is fantastic and can't be compared aesthetically with 2k, just becuase of the similar horizontal resolution, because the vertical resolution certainly makes such a huge difference.

I have never been a fan of 2k on this camera, but i love 4k anamorphic when it is squeezed back. The 3k still looks very nice with the anamorphic... we used a lot of it in another video we filmed the previous weekend:

The sun spots in the clip above are a problem i could probably have easily fixed if i hadn't been on such a tight deadline.

I will try and grab a few stills and grade them to match the rest of the material for posting online for anyone interested in shooting with LOMO's.

I have to say the rolling shutter artifacts don't really bother me... especially not enough to shoot on an entirely different format like 3k to avoid them.

Fantastic work! Those anamorphic flares are tasty. I'm curious to know what kind of handheld rig you were using. Red, Ugrip, something else?

Now this looked BRILLIANT it's always nice to see RED with anamorphic lenses. As you do it makes you wonder why shoot anything else.

Great job and I love the rework you've done on yours. I hope you don't mind but I've sent you a PM asking you who did it.

dude this video is outstanding
love the image you getting
I pmed you with some questions if you coudl answet them that woudl be great

What build did you use 'cause the rolling shutter artifacts really are showing here. I guess it would've been better to shoot it 3K.

regardless of little artifacts that an average viewer won't notice, I think it's a great job, like said: the energy of the camera movements/video blow little discrepancies like that out of the water. it's all about sacrifice right? ha. give up one thing and make up for it with another

Great Video(s)! What setting did you shoot the Slo-Mo sections with?

Thanks!

Slowmo was 3k 2:1 @ 50fps. Anamorphic settings were all to buggy in post.
James at the post factory was the expert doing all of the tech stuff and managed to get everything up and running effortlessly.

Thanks.

Simon Dennis DOP'd it for me. We used big hmi sources... mainly 2.5k's and bounced them for fill and soft key. I wanted a chilldren of men inspired available light feel to the narrative, but the band performance was a little more stylised/traditionally lit with harder/edgier backlights.

I don't think i will be able to post an HD version as the post production was all done at SD resolution i'm afraid, and i would have to re-render and conform all the material.

Sorry... i will try and post a full sd res version with higher quality scaling though.

love the look, not sure about the camera work though...I would have had some really nice smooth work along with the handheld, but not handheld the entire film...gives it a low'ish budget feel on what otherwise looks great.

tellin ya how I see it, no filters attached!
