Hey guys,

Im about to shoot a feature film using anamorphic lens on the alexa XT 4:3, my director is asking me what are our options for IMAX release, and what would happen to our frame size etc?

Anyone have experience with this?

thanks!

It's best to contact IMAX and discuss the your options with them. They are very picky about which films they will show that were not shot with IMAX cameras, and typically the films they will allow are larger films like The Dark Knight, The Amazing Spider Man, and The Hobbit. I also believe that they like 4K minimum content with the IMAX content being between 1.43:1 to 1.9:1 aspect ratios - even though most of their digital projectors are still 2K, but they have been changing their theaters to 4K projectors. It is also worth noting that the majority of IMAX hollywood feature films are shot at least partially on IMAX's very own film cameras with the intention of showing in IMAX theaters from the beginning of production. So again, I would recommend you begin talking to them if you are interested in IMAX distribution.

It is focused towards consumers but you could still learn a thing or two by checking out their website. It might offer more info than asking about shooting on an Alexa on the RED forums
