I can't seem to find a definitive answer to this question so I hope someone doesn't mind helping me out. If I were to shoot in 4K ANA mode and then export my properly stretched and scaled (2.39:1) footage from Red Alert would these files be larger in size then shooting 4K 2:1 and exporting it out from Red Alert. For the sake of the question let's say I'm exporting Prores HQ 1080p files. Basically, does stretching and scaling increase the file size and if so by how much? Thanks, Tommy

Tommy,

We shot
A Lonely Place for Dying
in 4k Anamorphic with the viewing target cropped to 2.35:1. We output everything in 2k ProRes (2048x1152) for editing and 4k ProRes (4096x2304) for VFX at full frame size. Only upon output do we crop to 2.35:1. This also allows us to reframe the image if needed.

Hope this helps

Brad

Sorry about the quote problem above. It should be in the body. I'm new to the board ;-(

So, the files do take up more space once you uncompress them. Is that why you wait till the very end? Thanks, Tommy

If you shoot with 2X anamorphic lenses, you don't need to expand the 4K RGB file sizes to double in width, you just need your viewing system during post to temporarily stretch the images out to look normal as you color-correct, etc.

At some point, you will need to remove the 2X optical squeeze for final home video mastering (or for HD dailies), creating a letterboxed image... but generally that involves reducing down to HD dimensions anyway, not doubling the width of the 4K files.

Thank you very much for the clarification. Tommy
