  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sorry for posting this in the main forum. I'm not sure where I should post RedRush questions.

Thanks for answering my question, Deanon. REDrushes is an amazing tool and is going to make my life about a million times easier. I also had another request for something to be possibly implemented into it. It might even be in there already, I just don't know how to do it yet.

Could you implement an option in Fit/Stretch which is "Stretch with Black Bars". That way if you need to crop and or stretch and image, you can lay it into a standard frame size in a 'letterbox' style mode.

For instance, if you have 2:1 aspect footage, you can use it to inset it into a 1280X720 frame with black bars on the top and bottom which will ease up some processing while offline editing.

In my specific case, I have is have footage shot with Lomo Anamorphics at a 2X squeeze. It's been framed on set for the extraction to come out of a 1.18 frame straight in the middle of the 2:1 shot (roughly 2.35 aspect when unsqueezed).

Ultimately, in a best case scenario I'd like to take the footage, unsqueeze it, crop the edges off for a 2.35 and inset it into a 16:9 1280X720 frame with black bars on top and bottom.

In any case, I got it all to extract properly from the half res version and it looks great, it's just comes out as a 1280X544 clip instead of a 1280X720 with black bars (the usable part of the frame being 1280X544).

Is there a way for the black bars to be implemented? I'm sure it would help some of us who would like to cut down on render times during the edit.

Thanks for the great tool!

Oh and here's a copy of my settings that I used. It's ProRes 422 (SQ)

I don't know what editor you use, but isn't it possible to simply put the 1280X544 clip into a 1280x720 timeline and specify the clip has 1:1 square pixels, thus letting the NLE make the black bars for you? (Or is the point that this needs extra rendering time?)

That is a solution and that's what I was doing today. But it is where it takes a little more render time. Even laying one clip on a high video track above another will slow it down to a degree. Enough that when editing on a project for 4-6 months it starts to get tiresome. Won't bother you the first few months, but the end's the killer.

It's not a total necessary thing, but would help us post guys out a little.

Other thing weird, I was trying to crop my image and do said above process today and the cropping wasn't working. It worked the first few times I did it and then stopped. I didn't try to reinstall RedAlert.

Reinstalled RedAlert and REDRushes to crop the the image and stretch it to fit in the frame. Cropping still not seeming to work.

Here's my settings (with the outputted file inset) and a sample of the original source.

What format did you shoot in? (ie. 4k 16:9, etc)
My guess is the numbers aren't quite right.

It's 4k 2:1 with it in mind that an extraction area in the middle of roughly 1.16 to be done. Stretched out to a 2.35 frame which is 1280 X 544.

My math goes as follows:

-2:1 4K being 4096 X 2048, pulling the Half res at 2024 X 1024.

-Take a 1.16 frame extraction from the center of that is 1188 X 1024.

-Stretch that out 2X and stretch it into a 1280 frame makes it 1280 X 544.

The stretching is working fine, it's the cropping that isn't seeming to go through. If you look at the edges of the frame you can see that they match on the original and on the REDRush output file.

This attachment is REDRush output with cropping only. Appears that the cropping is stretching instead. Notice the size is 1188 X 1024 of the QT

-EDIT-
It seems at least for me that if I set the Fit/Stetch to a specific thing it does that even if the box isn't checked. For example, if I set it to Fit Width it does that even though the box is not checked. Fit Height and Stretch settings do the same. It's weird because the other day it worked just fine.

The numbers are relative to the debayer resolution, so for your numbers to work, it should really be set to half instead of quarter. I think it's doing the stretching on crop only because the crop is greater than the output resolution from the quarter debayer. I'll check that logic on this end as I don't know of the top of my head.

Hey Deanon, thanks for the responses.

It was the debayer. I thought it was weird that it was working before and then not working as well later, but I didn't noticed that I wasn't pulling from the half res. I'm glad it was just me being dumb and not a bug or something.

Thanks again. Any word on getting a black bars feature?

Thanks

Hi William - I can't see the settings - am I missing an attachment link? I'm particularly interested in your crop method.
Thanks
