Hi All --
This was a film I had the pleasure of editing, co-producing and shooting portions of with my Scarlet in 2013. DP Levie Isaacs (ASC) lit and shot all of our main interviews (Michael, John Raley, jurors, Bill Allison) using two Scarlets (I operated one, Levie the other), and I also shot some exteriors and aerials. Director Al Reinert is an Oscar nominee for the 1989 doc 'For All Mankind' and as a writer for Apollo 13, and really paces the story well. Being a doc that has historical components, there's footage from all over the place, but when the interviews come on (and they come on a lot, plenty of talking heads in this one) they really shine.
It won a SXSW Documentary Spirit Audience Award and was picked up by CNN for their new documentary series, and we're proud to be part of that inaugural set of films (including Blackfish). It's a pretty amazing story, and beyond your 'typical' exoneration narrative.
Here's the CNN blurb:
"An Unreal Dream: The Michael Morton Story"
Directed by Al Reinert, the film portrays the harrowing true tale of Michael Morton. Wrongly convicted of the brutal murder of his young wife, Morton spends a quarter century in the Texas prison system, cut off from his only child, who believed him to be guilty of destroying their family.
Collaborating with his attorney and the Innocence Project, Morton clears himself through DNA testing. In the process he brings to bear the plight of America's unjust imprisonments.
Watch Thursday, December 5 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CNN.
Thanks!
John
