  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

An open letter to Red User about the Zacuto Tests

We have contacted many of the people you have listed. David Mullen would be great but he is on a job. It's difficult to nail down DP's because if they get a good gig they have to bail on you and that's understood. This test is different then last years. Give it a chance I think you will find it interesting.

You have to keep all conditions the same between cameras, if you're really testing cameras. So give all cameras to all the DPs and let them run their own battery. Set up the lighting one time per DP, and then have him use all the cameras on it. Maybe one DP per day, and he goes through all the cameras.

Anything else isn't going to provide a camera comparison.

And yes, the results should be scrutinized at 4K.

Mark Toia

Because I see him consistently bitch slap people with footage.
I also trust him to take it through post properly.

David
Mark's work is great, but his methods are somewhat less than optimal. +1 for David Mullen

Also PLEASE use the optimal ISO for each cam, and the optimal raw decoding methodology. Use ND to even things out, not the same ISO, as using the same ISO does not really make sense when each cam shines in terms of dynamic range at different ISO levels. Ask each camera manufacturer what THEY recommend, and follow it. Metering for 320 ISO (as you did last year) was not really fair on MX.

Steve, you can see around here excellent DP's. Go to the "Shot on Red section" and select the one you think impressed you the most. If David Mullen and the others are not available, another good solution was to see from all Hollywood blockbusters shot on Epic right now coming out, who is DP'ing them and if they are available. That would be another great solution.

Peter Lyons Collister, ASC would be great as well. He just shot 2nd unit Amazing Spiderman on the Epic.... He owns one and uses it frequently.

Well, I actually am available, but I'm in DC.

I support screening all the tests at both 2K and 4K. I expect that to reveal that the 4K cameras are better for 2K delivery than most if not all the 2K cameras ... excepting maybe Alexa from ARRI RAW sources.

I do have to say that having a competent post team is as important as a competent on set team. Some folks can really handle both sides of the project, but that's not true of every candidate we've mentioned here.

Hi Alex, they already shot the tests this week... I had friends from out of state representing one of the other camera companies.

I would have loved to have helped but I was (am) booked solid.

Don't forget, this isn't about who is your favorite cinematographer. The cameras will all be doing the same setups, right?

I would choose someone who has the most experience with Red post-production but also happens to know the exact right camera settings to use for the shot given.

Ive was lucky enough to be onset for the last Zacuto shoot and saw some real masters of their crafts at work . The above is a very valid point and Brook or Toia seem to fit this role really well.
P.S craft services were pretty good on the last shoot too

Ha! That's what happens when you pay "close attention."

C'est la vie.
