  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

An Examination of: Lomo Foton 37-140 2x Anamorphic Square Front

I'm working on it.. i still have to finish the Cooke Cinevarotal review first....

I've been working 6 day weeks for a month. Not much free time unfortunately. Unfortunately, for the reviews,.... fortunately for me and my work however. :)

Hey Guys. So, I've been hiding a little secret in my cupboard. It's called the Foton Anamorphic lens. I was shocked at how sharp it was shooting with the Canon 24-105 F4.0. Anywho, I'm selling it and I got curious about what other folks experience was with it. Needless to say, I was FLOORED to see a bunch of crazy soft footage. ..and coming from Pros like Timur Civan. So, I know it wasn't user error.

So, it turns out my secret is even bigger than I thought! So, the secret is to pair the anamorphic lens adapter with the Canon 24-105 F4.0 and.....BANG! POW! PRESTO CHANGE-OOO! Sharp footy at your service. BTW, the zoom portion of the combo works too! I don't have it "rigged up", and won't get a chance anytime soon, but, I do have pics of me changing the focal length and still being in focus. (Waiting for them to load to Flickr...I'll update this in a sec.)

Here's the Flickr Set: http://www.flickr.com/photos/27469265@N02/sets/72157638422060435/

Enjoy!

I'll embed a couple:

You can't pull focus at the same time - using this front lens attachment, it becomes dual focus.

Also, there's no way to pair this with a normal Foton zoom as it's connection collar is missing - basically, there's a small collar with a receiving slot. The Foton zoom has a notch that slides into the slit on the collar - this makes the system single focus.

I really can't imagine using a dual focus anamorphic in any situation - but a lot of the home brew anamorphic guys (DSLR) seem to use this method.

This foton adapter on ebay looks to be something else entirely. Maybe it's just really old, but it's not like the standard foton A. As Andy said, usually there is a keyway in the focusing collar, on this adapter there is a key instead of the keyway. It's also shaped differently than a standard one. I wonder if it was customized for something else.

Nick - I've seen this type before - it's an early to mid 60's model. I think they were made up to '68 or '69 before the style was changed (to a smooth top - without the lugs/connectors for the diopters). Basically this older type had diopters that slot in - rather than the later model that has s smooth surface and the diopters slide/clip to the top.

The version I saw was the same as this one, but it did have a functional collar/second ring/keyway (for connection to the Foton zoom) - so I think this one is pretty much missing it's mounting collar. Or, had a mounting collar made in reverse for the way a standard Foton slides into the 1A... although, having typed that... I can't see how it would work (LOL)?

Guess we'll never know???

Just looked on my laptop and found a pic of the older type - compare it to the Ebay one and you can see it's missing the lower collar - as you say, where the normal keyway goes.

Here's a link to a piece shot with one of these that I think is sharper. I don't think the lens used in these tests was the sharpest lens around, or it may have needed the anamorphic calibrated to the zoom.
