So I was jonesing the other week to get my hands on the EPIC and thought I would pay Mark Pederson and the OffHollywood family a little visit and then follow up with a Leica Demo at BandPro. What a week. :coolgleamA:

Lots of info is starting to surface about EPICs and I wanted to add that no matter what hype you hear...it will never live up to how incredible it is to hold all that juice in the palm of your hand. Navigating menus is completely intuitive and dreamy, I jumped right in and felt at home. Lots of little easter eggs, for example I noticed you can even pinch the screen (iphone style) for a 2x focus assist! The Redmote is slick, small, light, and the connection is rock solid...rest assure the connection of modulars is very secure. As a R1 owner and operator it was a surreal experience and simply blows my mind how they achieved this technical feat...Bravo Jim and RED team.

Next stop was Bandpro and I will keep this short but the Leica glass demo was impressive to say the least and I personally consider the Summilux-C line to be some of the finest cinema glass ever made. The size, speed, craftsmanship... superlative...these lenses are a work of art right down to the silky matte finish. Elements are built in stages (read modular) design that allows rental houses to replace front element with ease and without breaking the bank. The front element from what I understand is the least working element and will cost about 1k to replace...dont quote me on that. As a long time Leica shooter, the possibility of shooting my 1st feature with Leica glass on an RED EPIC camera is a dream come true. (please post pic of that combo Mark!)

I am planning an EPIC-M shoot and promise to share my experience along the way. Thanks Jim Hegadorn and Seth Emmons of Bandpro for coming out and thanks Mark and gang for helping me get my fix. :cheers2:

Awesome ! Thanks for sharing Clayton.

BTW, who mounted the LCD ? Looks so funny... :-)

=] Awesome. Thanks for sharing.

Sure no problem.
LCD is quite versatile...mount it how ever you wish. I imagine I would use it mostly as a control surface in bigger production environments and as a monitor/control for everything else. Ask the Spidey crew, they could be pulling focus off it for all I know...its sharp enough to do so. You will be dealing with some glare EXT day so hood is a must...for me that goes without saying on any monitor, even anti glare. Make sure your AC stocks up on the LCD wipes, like a CSI crime scene. ;) Let me be very clear, the new RED touch screen monitor is must have!

Thanks for the report, Clay. I'm really excited about these new Leica primes. Apparently, they were designed for 8K sensors, eventually, so they should be insanely sharp on the Epic.

Whoa! the Leica primes come in Eos mount too? or is there some super small PL mount on that 7D I can't see?

pl converted 7d.

those leicas are way too freakin good. wish I had 180k to burn.

combined with epic, best in class for balls amazing image, and compact rig.

Oh, Clay... man! You may have just out-Sanjined Sanjin!

Too funny ... thanks for the awesome report Clay. Red/Epic and Leicas are like 98% of the reason I'm going to NAB, the rest is icing on the cake :)

Nice see you play with the nice toys Clay ;)

We might make it to NY after our trip to Miami for the Under Water housing and shoot some stuff on Epic M together ;)

And yeah the Redmote is a little piece of Art in it self, I can't think of shooting without it ;)

Also few asked a nice shot of the Redmote next to the iPhone for size idea...

Thats not possible. ;)

Correct, the projections I studied were "perfect"...the live images I saw were insanely sharp as you put it Tom, unlike anything I have seen so it's hard to describe.

Clay, thanks for a nice report that I just discovered right now but hopefully not too late.

Looking forward to see what you will do with that amazing combo EPIC-M/Leica-SC at your first feature...

Ketch let's do it...sounds great man. Speaking of under water housing I have a shoot with Summer Rayne Oakes around the 25th and we are trying to do a poor mans budget underwater shoot so if anyone has thoughts please holler. Other wise I will snag a gopro HD and steal shots in a pool. It's for an art installation.

Either way give me a shout if your in the big apple buddy. Safe travels.

Just in time Sanjin! I look forward to that myself. I am sure you will be seeing some shots of this combo in the very near future. ;)
