  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

American Cinematographer

I think that while the article is accurate, it could give the wrong impression to many. The article is more or less designed to point out the hurdles that one may face when shooting on the Red, and it does a good thorough job. My only concern is that it potentially reads overly critical of the Red in my eyes - the vast majority of the text focuses on the problems, with only one or two cursory sentences mentioning how proud of the images he is.I think the images speak for themselves, but if someone is not a careful reader the piece could come off as a warning NOT to use the red. While all of the hurdles listed are real (and I think its admirable that he points them out to save other peoples headaches) I think they are given too much weight. I wouldnt want to see a film not use the red because they are worried about batteries jostling or the red drive skipping frames. These issues are pretty marginal I think, but are given a lot of weight in the piece...

There are certain leading members have voiced their strong dislike of Red (heard this personally) while being paid consultants for other manufacturers. It appears that while ASC and RED wants to have a more collaborative relationship, I don't think this kind of biased articles helps the industry grow.

I also don't doubt that red's not advertising in AC or other mags helps. When I worked for magazines, there was a strong push to not be negative if the article was a advertiser also.

Hi,

If your car breaks down, you may well dislike the manufacture. Many early users got burnt badly, due to incorrectly collimated cameras from the factory, cameras that did not work in the cold & overheated. Bad experiances can cost a great deal to the person who recomended it's use.

I've had my fair share of problems with Viper, Genesis (damn errant pixels and dead columns), film, etc. also and it's our job work around them as usual. With thousands of cameras out there, no doubt the problems will happen more frequently compared to a couple hundred cameras.

I never had any problem with RED hardware and software.

During two years of rental time I met sometimes funny people

that didn't take care so much about camera, its use and also didn't respect my rental conditions.

That's the main reason I stopped rentals for the moment just to keep my RED1 "healthy" and save from "injuries".

Actually I did it mainly to save R1 and myself from dealing with that sort of "idiots".

Also desperately waiting to upgrade my R1-M to M-X like most of us.

At first I was renting also and dealt with some badly cared for cameras that had probably been to hell and back. Then I just bought my own so I knew it was always properly cared for.

I always rented the same RED One no 336...

I love to see 336 again and again. This way you surely treat the camera with due respect. And I never had any trouble with it.
