AMA - a short film by Julie Gautier (Red VistaVision 8K)

"Ama is a silent film. It tells a story everyone can interpret in their own way, based on their own experience. There is no imposition, only suggestions. I wanted to share my biggest pain in this life with this film. For this is not too crude, I covered it with grace. To make it not too heavy, I plunged it into the water. I dedicate this film to all the women of the world." - Julie

Ama, “Woman of the Sea” in Japanese, is a short film directed by the apneist and dancer Julie Gautier and presented on the International Women’s Day on March 8th.

Performed in the world’s deepest pool in Italy, Gautier holds her breath for the duration of the film, only allowing herself to open her lungs when she rises to the surface at the culmination of her beautifully choreographed routine. Named ‘Ama’, the film draws its title from 海女, a Japanese term that refers to pearl divers and which translates literally to mean sea maiden. The practice of ama is said to be over 2000 years old, and traditionally the women it refers to would dive without scuba gear or air tanks, making it the precursor of the modern free dive movement which Gautier is a part of.

Simply superb ! What an amazing talent Julie Gautier is. The Monstro sensor captures it all beautifully. How does she seem to have weight and traction underwater as she moves? Is there a low profile weight belt ? Magical.

She was performing this underwater ballet at 10 meters (32.8'). She has very little body fat. At that depth and with her advanced training, she could easily pull this task without weights. If she is wearing hidden weights (that's a possibility) I would say less than 7lbs.

Here is another Youtube post about her underwater cinematography profile: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDd4dMz_gR0
