It seems like everyone is after a shallow focus these days (which I predict will turn around after high-FPS/3D stuff becomes common) . . . am I alone in wanting deeper focus, rather than shallower focus?

The only people that are all twitchy freaked out about shallow depth of field are people who started off working with prosumer camcorders.
I'm not sure what you're saying. Elaborate?
1/3" and smaller format sensors require lenses of such short focal lengths that there is very little possibility of shooting shallow DOF Under most conditions everything is always in focus to infinity.
I think there was a previous thread devoted to examples of deep focus -- and a discussion thereof.
Personally, I've only worked with a prosumer camcorder, and not a very good one at that (the Sony HVR-Z1U), but I watch a lot of movies and know what my aesthetic goals are. I have a thing for deep focus and normal viewing angles (and am also looking forward to experimenting with higher frame rates). I'm not arguing that it's better or worse than anything else; I only mention it to out of curiosity. Zooms and shallow focus will no doubt be useful for commissioned work.
I did a quick search for "deep focus" and did not find it—sorry about that.
Selective focus is a tool. You know whether you want it or not. Don't want it, don't use it. Want it, then go ahead and use it. We could sit here all day and list title after title that uses selective focus and is brilliant, same as we could sit here and make a list of films that make use of primarily deep focus shots that are just as accomplished.
Believe it or not, we could also compile a list just as big, which contains a mixture of deep and shallow focus shots.
As has been said, selective focus is only a big deal at the moment because it's a newly availible tool to the low/no budget filmmaker. Once the masses have this tool, they will learn very quickly when, and when not, to use it.
These threads get boring at a very quick rate.

Then don't click them. I intentionally made the subject line clear and to the point. Also, if you don't want to argue (notice, if you read my previous post, that I am not here to argue either), then don't argue. I wanted some feedback and I got it.
