Hi all

is there an alternative to buying a RED touch display? For the 4.7 inch its almost 2000 euro in the uk with VAT applied which is a lot for a small screen which then requires more money spent if you want to mount on a gimbal with the lemo converter. Im just wondering if its possible to control the camera with any other cheaper screens? I need something I can mount on the camera and also on a ronin -Is there an alternative?

thanks

Marc

You can use any monitor you want (SDI or HDMI, you only need an expander with the right port, like a jetpack or a base i/o), then you can control the camera with the sidekick or the side handle (the dsmc2 version isn't out yet!) which are cheaper than touch screens.

Foolcontrol (control with an iOS device over wifi - it's amazing) is another solution. You need a dsmc2 brain or dsmc1 with redlink/wifi router to the eth port, but I think you still need a touch/sidekick to configure wi-fi settings first. I heard about wifi settings loaded via redmag, Mikael will have an answer for this.

i do agree the touch screen is definitely the best way to control the camera and would be part of my longer term plans but to get it up and running I was just seeing if there's a cheap alternative, initially this is only going to be used for personal projects anyway so Im not too worried if it takes a little longer to setup. 4.7 inch touch for 2000 euros is pretty steep.

Two options currently to go without a touchscreen: a) sidekick b) foolcontrol. Thats it.

To me, the key is the upcoming sidehandle for DSMC2. If it offers similar control-options like the one for DMSC1 then you could easily go without a touchscreen. It's not the best choice, i switch between SH and touch all the time, but the SH alone is awesome and sometimes i don't do a lot on the touch. I love buttons, especially when you have enough of them and can setup everything as you desire. ;)

I wouldn't want to rely on a iOS-device, not as the only option to control my camera. I'm not sure about the Sidekick, it's not meant to replace the SH, totally different design, but i guess i could adapt to it.

Currently? I highly suggest paying the extra bucks for the touchscreen, it's an awesome screen, not just because it got touch-functionality. Seriously, a touchscreen is essential for RED. ;)

We use the SmallHD 502 and it's great. We use it on the ronin too and can't really complain about anything.

I agree that touchscreen is the overall best way, especially for run and gun. But I prefer the smallHD monitor when we have time to set up because the resolution is so much better.

Just curious - what do you use to control the camera?

The Blackmagic video assist is a great little monitor - especially for $495 USD list. It's true 1920x1080 and is powered by inexpensive Canon batteries (or numerous clones-one comes with it) or an external DC input (12V power supply included) and also records Prores or DNXHD to SD cards if you want (nice backup). I believe it also down converts from 4K/UHD to 1920x1080 on the input and has SDI and HDMI in/out.

I have a Video Devices Pix E5 and i have it on a little hotshoe off my top handle. Its small and light and i power it from the dtap plate almost always. The fact that it records pro res for some clients or for backup is a plus. I like it more for the fact that it has peaking and waveforms and all those extra things that can help keep you informed on things. When i need i rent a touch for certain things like a still photo shoot but i can quickly cruise my menus via the side handle. I also have the red bomb evf hooked in prrtty much all the time as well.

When on the Ronin we use the Redmote. If we don't have that handy, we just make the adjustments using the side handle gently
