We get asked this alot... So I thought I would just post a list of the approved alternative lens mounts for your RED ONE camera that will not affect your warranty with proper installation.

We really appreciate the time (and heartache :) ) that all these companies have gone through to give all you RED ONE camera owners Lens options.

Birger Engineering Canon Smart Mount

Alesniak Canon Smart and Dumb Mounts

Long Valley (Douglas Underdhal) Various Lens mounts

Visual Products BNCR MOUNT

There are a few other companies that have products in the works. Martin has put a great detailed list with more details in the lens forum:

We have not ever seen the Birger Dumb mount, we can only authorize mounts we actually get here and test.

Birger Dumb Mount, does it exist?

Birger Dumb Mount, does it exist?

So, the question of the dumb mount... we do sell the canon lens mount without electonics, and one can buy the red camera adapter a la carte. So technically, if our web store were up, one would be able to assemble this combination, and the net result would be something like a $500 or $600 dumb canon mount. I never bothered to submit it to RED for evaluation, as I didn't feel it a really useful product. If my analysis is wrong, convince me otherwise. Nine out of ten people that have bought the dumb version of our Canon lens mount come back to us and say "Wow that is rather useless. Please, can I upgrade to the electronic one?"

Jarred, as for the submission of a test candidate, please have someone do the following (that is, if anybody cares to buy a dumb mount from Birger) with the mount you guys already have:
  1. Remove the lens mount from the camera adapter (4x 2-56 x 5/8 screws)
  2. Remove the electronics capsule from the lens mount that you have (3x 1-72 philips head screws),
  3. Replace the lens mount onto the camera adapter.
  4. Decide if it voids the warranty.

Beyond writing this post, as I feel as though there is a market for about three of these, I am not inclined to go through any formal process regarding the warranty.

There is absolutely no point in having a dumb EOS mount unless you want to use it as the base to adapt to other makes of lenses that have external iris rings. And if you want that you might as well go for the Wicked Circuits/Alesniak one which is simpler, maybe slightly cheaper and already doesn't cause any Red warranty issues!

What is the time frame for a qualification process when a mount design is received by RED?

David

no such thing as a time frame... we get to it as soon as we can :)

I will also add that some of the above mounts require special installation procedures to ensure that the mount does not void the RED ONE warranty. Those third parties would have the information on what those installation steps are so please make sure you ask them at time of purchase.

Thanks, BC

EPIC SCARLET Compatability of Birger etc.

EPIC SCARLET Compatability of Birger etc.

Hi Jarred, congrats...

Thanks for starting this interesting thread.

I have the Birger mount, which works well, I intend to upgrade to the Epic when it is available...and in special nifty colors....Then hopefully upgrade to the FF sensor when it becomes available.

As FF etc. sensor sizes become available the need for lenses which cover for budget productions screams use of still lenses that cover the entire SLR 36mm frame and them some. Cine lense just don't cut it and not every production can pay for purchase or rental of REDs classy new lenses.

THUS: I'm hoping that my Birger Canon Smart mount will fit the Epic!!!! Any reassurance here is much appreciated!
