  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Alternative field recorder

That looks handy. Seems a bit pricey, but I guess it's one of a kind. I notice they don't show any actual pictures of it, just drawings...

I am glad to see more and more people moving towards cf cards.
Is it save to say that RED was the first one?

Alternative recorders.

Alternative recorders.

Codex has a RAW data product line-up we respect, but the majority of video recorders will have little value to the RED-ONE user.

e.g. purchase a 4:2:2 MPEG-2 to CF recorder for $5K, or a 4K REDCODE RAW to CF adaptor for $500? No contest.

And for under $1K you can buy a RED-DRIVE with 2 1/2 hours of 4K REDCODE RAW record time.

True. But for the uncompressed RAW port the codex box sure would be handy for the RED camera.

Perhaps as a backup or 1080 acquisition/delivery option

No way....just record to CF Cards on camera. If you aren't shooting uncompressed, there is absolutely NO NEED for an external recorder (other than a video assist record unit) to record a master, as that is on your CF Card.

You back that up right when it is full, and continue shooting. Lugging around one of those recorders (unless shooting Uncompressed RAW) is beyond redundant.

If I had a SI-2k I would consider it. With Red there isent any point choosing any of these options above a RED-drive or CF.

Don't lose sight of the fact that the Codex box is pricey relative to the Red camera. It may be a viable rental option...but I remember hearing the purchase price of $60,000-80,000 thrown around (although I can't confirm this figure on their website).

Yep. It's pricey. But so will the rental be. Remember, this workflow is only for the VERY high end. So the price to buy it will be a lot. I would guess you'd be around $150K to get a FULL system with all components needed.

So this is for the big features, the big commercials. This is the way RED can compete head on with the Viper/Stwo workflow. So compared to that, this will be cheaper....and slicker.

Hi Brian, I can confirm the price of a Codex Portable is $44,500. This includes one diskpack that gives you 3 hours of capture at 4:1, much higher quality than the 12:1 on REDCode (similar codec).

And apart from that, Codex is all about workflow. It also gives you live de-Bayering, live down-res to both HD and SD, direct DPXs, live wireless MP4 monitoring, QuickTimes, high-speed backup to other devices etc. etc, and of course you can use it (with exactly the same easy workflow) with any other HD, 2K or 4K camera you care to use. It will be available from the end of this year. Oh and it weighs 9lbs (4 kilos), so lugging is not really the word.

Regarding the Codex Recorder (which is a rental item and will capture RED in uncompressed), it is probably also worth noting that it isn't quite in the same class as several other recorders touted on this forum from time to time, as it's already been used on quite a few 'grown up' projects (as well as a couple of indies and even some 3D stuff) in the last 6 months and you can rent them from several top rental companies already.

Good to see you on here. I have been following your product line for a while now. I am considering making the plunge when the RED RAW port comes out, but would love to speak more with someone at Codex before doing this. I would specifically like to know its advantages over the STwo system and I would also like to know more about the wireless output that goes to laptops, etc.....you know who i could talk to to find out more about your product line? PM Me.

So, Stuart and Irony, what's the posibility of the codex portable to work with Redcode RAW instead of (or additionaly to) cineform?

Some of us would love to see a partnership between Red and Codex.

Thanks,

Thanks for clarifying the pricetag on the Codex recorder. Obviously there has been a lot of misinformation about its cost. Now we know!
