I rarely post, but this question has been on my mind for quite awhile.

What other than cinema and still photos would a RED camera be good at?

- Hi-res, high-speed scanner for fine art, large images, etc.?
(not to mention documenting/authenticating fine art)

You could scan a lot of slides at 120 fps, assuming you could move the slides that quickly. ;-)

- 3D scanner? (using a 3D cinema rig? Though it's probably a very different requirement)

I'm a noob with almost no film/video experience behind the camera (in spite of spending a fortune at what used to be a well thought of school); but I'm pretty good at asking ignorant questions which elicit interesting answers. ;-)

Thanks for indulging me.

And yes, I'll be happy to assist on any Bay Area shoots. I'm a good PA/Video assistant, and a Mac technician.

Along with all the points above (all correct). It is one of the great cameras for teaching the finer points of cinematography without the considerable cost of film stock and transfer. It also encourages the mastering of color grading.
With that in mind you can experiment with many uses. You have little to lose. Good luck.

Fine Art reproduction is done with a much larger resolution image and with large format camera, one which can correct for perspective distortions, etc...

You can shoot a laser at an object while rotating it on a 360 plate so you can build the 3D geometry from it. Haven t tried it with a RED or any camera that high res though.

The Epic is amazing at shooting footage for plates and HDR textures...

If any of the models don't have an IR filter you might be able to do some thermal imaging, even body imaging after workouts. Machine vision to inspect parts and production lines, Red could easily sell 4k units into this market for $2k. Security cameras. I'm sure you can find a site, maybe on Wikipedia that will list all the common uses for video cameras.
