I lost one of the drive support rods on the Red Cradle. Red will replace it, but it's fairly pricey. So I'm looking for alternative mounting methods. I've seen the Element Technica mount and I know Ugrip has one. Anything else out there?

I also bought this mount, I shoot lots of steadicam and it offers a very compact means of attaching the drive if you don't require the v-lock plate that comes with the RED drive/battery assembly.

Are you using your AP mounts with the shock absorbing option. How well does it work - it looks like the drive can flop around more than the ET option?

How much is the support rod? I have been parting out some of my accessories, already removed the battery plate from my crade for use in a housing so might be able to make a decent deal on the part you need.

No, I don't have the shock absorbers, and I don't really like the look of them. With the hard mount, the drive is very solid, easily reposition-able, and compact. I really prefer that mounting system to the RED cradle.
The shock absorbers seem to me like they would protect from vibration, but it looks to me like a bigger shock could easily whack the drive against the side of the camera. Again, I haven't used them, so I don't really know, but if I felt the need for a shock mount, I think I'd look at the ET mount or a RED RAM.
All that said, I love the AP mount without the shock mount. Simple. Elegant. Compact.

I mount my drive on the top rods with foam underneath it. I use rubber bands to hold it on like an RC Airplane wing. Think it cost me $5. I've been using it that way for a year. I do a ton of weird handheld stuff and have never dropped frames.

It's probably the slickest setup I've ever scene in terms of weight, cost, functionality. Every AC who's seen is like "damn, that's genious". Yeah. LOL.

In the low budget ain't pretty but works realm: a set up as Joel has described. I more commonly use the same idea with a Red universal plate, a bit of foam as shock absorber, couple of velcro straps - can mount top, side, angle, bottom -- low budget if you have a spare universal plate hanging around -- but I've done Joel's technique as well and never any trouble.

That's a great little mount - love it.

I wanted lightness, mobility and speed to take the camera out of the case and go, so I had an L-shaped plate machined for me - one side (top) has the v-mount battery plate and the side angle (parallel with the camera body) has 2 inch wide velcro. It's simple, the drives never budge and there is enough shock absorption for helicopter shots (not if the camera dips into the sliptsream though - nothing will help with that). Drives zip on and off in a second with a stern twisting motion.

We have the ET V-mount system, and it's great. It's really quick to swap drives and the shock mounts really do help minimize vibrations. In order to get the drive to hit the side of the camera you'd practically have to throw it down the stairs.

Cheers,

Colin
