  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Alpha 2.02 issues - please report here

I have been using 2.02 since it came out and it's been perfect. But today the camera froze and would not reboot. Tried pulling all cables, leaving it off etc. The green light would come on and it would recognize when it had an SSD, but no monitor and wouldn't go into record. Reinstalled firmware and it's working again.

Very strange and the first time since I got the Epic that it didn't do exactly what I told it.

Did seem to coincide with bumping the battery, but not hard enough to lose power.

can you email me a log file?

If I play back with evf attached, when I go back to live view the evf is disrupted/ has a rolling image. Unplugging evf does not fix it. Only power cycling fixes it . On both M and X bodies. Almost 100% repeatability

Same happened with me on 1.7... firmware. Reinstalling firmware helped.

messing with gpo/sync to "shutter" freezes image on camera. Cycle power kills LCD / EVF never gets off macbeth. repeat, same result. upon a reoboot buttons still work, although respond slowly. Just cant see anything to undo gpo/sync setting. multiple reboots random button pushes later i got LCD to come up enough to navigate to gpo/sync menu. went to "none" , cycle power and back to normal.
this with side handle attached and powoered via APU and batt in side handle. initially with LCD then reboots tested with both LCD and EVF.

also, choosing "genlock" causes stutter in lcd, akin to 12-18fps. turn it off, back to normal.

When I import presets from 1.6.46 and earlier, the camera will only output black (after shutdown and multiple lens options). However, changing to RAW view allows me to see picture. Really weird. When I delete the preferences or restore to factory settings the problem goes away. Not a big deal to redo button configs but I've always been able to reapply presets to newer builds.

I am having issues with Audio..... I can hear the audio, and see the levels moving but during playback I can not hear it. This is through HDSDI. Not only through HDSDI but through RCX-Pro. I can see the audio waveform in RCX-Pro, but no sound.... not sure about this one. Have tried different settings, and nothing seems to come through.

2.0.2 gave me sound indication issue, where the sound graph wouldn't show any sound input but on headphones I was hearing sound. There was a red dot indication in front of the sound graph track. Fortunately the R3D clip contained the recorded sound. For safety we recorded sound on a Zoom but didn't use it a the end.

I am sure the audio is not present during playback, but will be there in Redcine. Try reseating the front 3.5mm jackplugs if you get red sound indicators. Worked for me.

I'm starting to worry that I come across like a sound man!

After a second 10 plus hour day with no issues (man that is a nice thing to say when shooting an alpha build)

I can report the minor (or major issue) that sees the camera defaulting to 3:1 compression (kinda randomly) or 18:1 compression. (I think it has something to do with presets.

If RED needs camera log files then they can let me know.

I don't see any reason why there would be a difference between M and X cameras. From what I know they are exactly identical in all ways except for the exterior shell. Hand machine compared to production line. Small variance in the heat sync but all of the current M cameras will be swapped to the new heat sync free soon enough.

I do believe the heatsink is a little different in the "M" version as well, allowing it to be slightly lighter....

That's what I said the heat sync is different but the X cameras are the ones with a slightly lighter heat sync according to a post from Jarred a while back which shows both of them on the scale.

Don't set it to shutter unless you have a shutter pulse coming in.
No shutter pulse = no shutter action = no update in picture.
