Hello forum,

I've been reading you for awhile now, but have never introduced myself. So here I am.

I'm pretty much finished my build for a dual boot system (snow leopard and windows 7). I'll mainly be using cs5 production suite in windows 7. It's just good to have Final Cut for compatibility reasons.

Here's my set up:

i7 950 (will oc to 4ghz) (will save up pennies over the next couple months for a 980x) with an h70 water cooler to keep those temps down.
x58 ud7 motherboard
Mbox 3 (avid branded. Came with pro tools 8 le)
Pair of KRK Rokit 5's
efix 1.1 (for os x. Worked perfectly on my previous set-up)
GTX 480 for acceleration within adobe premiere
12 gb of Corsair Vengeance ddr3 (1600) (will buy 12 more within a couple weeks)
Dell U2711 IPS panel monitor
I'm currently using a cooler master cosmos case, but will switch up to a HAF X for increased air flow.

I wish I could have afforded better parts, but I am on a lowly p.a's budget.

My main question is on the raid set-up.

I have 4 1tb 7200rpm seagate drives ready to go for a raid 0 setup. An additional WD black 1tb 7200rpm (currently running my windows os) and another 1tb seagate (currently running os x) are also available.

After some research I was planning on buying the rocketraid 640 and using that to set up 2 raid 0 drives for my windows/cs5 set-up. (highpoint has good compatibility with both windows and os x). I was then going to purchase dual 2tb drives and use them as back up in case one of the raid 0 drives fail.
I'd keep my os x drive on a single 7200rpm as Final Cut gets much less use.

Anyways... does that make sense to you guys? Do you have any other suggestions. I am on an extremely limited budget, and trying to prep for an important short shot on the red one.

I'd love a red rocket, but the $3000 (used) price tag is a bit steep for me right now. I have free access to the Red one and all the equipment, and an amazing crew ready to back me up. It's the post that's scaring me!

Any advice would be amazing!

Even if you read through all that... that's amazing too!

Post is not scary. Sure, it's more complex than DV but way simpler than 35mm, which is what these cameras are. Don't sweat it. It's easy.

On the setup, not sure how reliable Hackintosh is at the moment as a working platform. I wish it were otherwise - it'd be my first choice.

I edited a feature length documentary using final cut studio with absolutely no issues on my last build. Which was a Hackintosh.

As long as you use the right parts it works flawlessly, and is much much cheaper. AND more flexible!

I transcode R3D footage with my ASUS dual XEON REDROCKET system.

Prores 422HQ is faster than real time.

No raids.

EDIT: if you don't have access to a REDROCKET, I would say your next best bet would be to make your write drive setup as fast as it can be.

For safety, you might want to consider doing a raid 5 setup. ...especially since you're using Seagates! :001_tongue: Sorry ...I'm biased.

Heh. I'd love a Redrocket. Do you have any suggestions where I could find one used?

They do, but $3000 plus tax and shipping is well beyond my means at the moment.

I would consider using Luigi's tools to set up an ASUS P6T7... more expansive mainboard, but you wouldn't need an Efix 1.1, and it got 7 PCIe slots.

For the raid card... I'm using a Areca 1880i with 8x 1TB Samsung F3 in a RAID0. Fast as hell and you can boot OSX from it. Just don't forget the backups:smile:

If render time is not an issue, you don't need a Rocket (still it's useful). With a fast RAID0, you can convert all the R3Ds in RedCineX to DPX or TIF sequences and use them for post. Premiere CS5 should also play back R3Ds in realtime in 1/4 resolution.

Check the RedUser DaVinci forum for threads on hackintoshs or write me a pm.

Thanks David. I've already built with those specs though. So it's too late to change now!

I ended up going with the rocketraid 640. It has 4 internal ports which have the option to use 6gb sata III, so in the future (when they aren't insanely priced) I could raid 0 some ssd's. For now I've set up 4 1TB drives with 2 raid 0 partitions. That's enough for me. I'm going to purchase 2 2tb drives to use as backup with Acronis.

I'm hooked on EFI-X now! I've been using it for almost 2 years and it works without a hitch! I recently built a hackintosh for a friend of mine with the same results.

The only issue is the sleep mode function is kind of wonky, but considering what you save, I can sure go without it. I'm mostly on windows 7 anyways. That's what I purchased CS5 production suite for. I prefer red's performance in Adobe than Final Cut... it's native, and uses all of my Ram... ...and the GTX 480.
