Hi!

Is there anyone that have tried both pl mounts? I'm looking at the stainless steal version from ciercio7 (http://en.foto-akcesoria.com.pl/index.php/shop/product?idproduct=397&productname=pl-red)

Feedback? I'll be using it on my coming Red Scarlet-W

Thanks

Just as an FYI, the original 3rd party PL (and PV) mount used by the largest feature films and rental companies is 100% made in the USA by Hot Rod Cameras.

But I don't expect the thread to last long as everytime someone mentions a 3rd party PL mount, the thread is deleted quickly.

Have you looked at the wooden camera PL mount? it's $400 and lighter than the RED TI PL mount.

What 3rd party PL threads have been deleted?

I have a ceircio7 aluminium version and it just works. PL is generally a dummy mount anyway, so it's not the most difficult thing to get right. Also, I've experienced a couple RED PLs that are super tight; like too tight.

I'd definitely put Wooden Camera on your list too, since the price is just as competitive and I haven't heard anything bad about them.

Hi Illya

How strong is the HRC PL mount compared to the Red PL ? (If it's possible to have any idea)

Thank you

Hi Mike!

So how do you think the aluminium works in extreme temperatures? I got the following message about their new "Stainless steel" that it's more durable?

Hello Max

I would recommend this product:

http://fotoakcesoriaen.epoksystem.pl/index.php/shop/product?idproduct=397&productname=pl-red

It has stainless steel front flange like all PL mount lenses. It's better when steel connects with steel. It is also shimmable so you can adujst the mount without touching back focus on the camera.

Best Regards

I haven't used the stainless steel one, but I'd think it's just as good (but more rugged and shimmable, which isn't a bad thing). Coldest I've used it was about 0c... Warmest about 40c... Worked the same in both...

As mentioned in that other thread, the only thing I'd be worried about with any 3rd party mount isn't strength/temp-tolerances, but anamorphics... The set-pin can be off ever so slightly and it completely skews the image (so you should test them as soon as you get the mount)...

Well since 2008 or so, I've lost count. Since 2012 there has definitely been a few, deleted posted, edited posts, locked threads...condescending comments from admins.

There's two theories about stainless in a PL mount. And it really depends on the implementation and the quality of the design and build. Point being, very few 3rd parties build a proper PL mount, and while I used to point out all the problems in a public forum, I've decided I'm no longer going to help my competition.

I will say I see a lot of poorly made stainless PL mounts, and aluminum ones as well, I used to repair those crappy mounts for a fee, but I've stopped doing that too.

Just because someone can not immediately see a problem when a PL mount is installed does not mean that one is not present, and that the problems won't reveal themselves when the conditions are correct.

Ultimately you have to decide who you trust, be it a company that builds their mounts in China and lies about it being made in the USA? A company that sells primarily low-end product and only on ebay? Or a company building mounts OEM for multiple large camera manufacturers, rental houses and some of the largest productions of all time. I don't know what's most important to you- maybe you just really need to save 100 bucks and don't care about the rest.

go with the red one. the used ones out there are cheap. i got a used one in excellent condition. also the electronics are nice when using cooke s5i. Silverstack reads and keeps all the meta.
