  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dangerous. Wouldn't you say?

Exactly. Also a waste, some standards should be adhered to for safety.

I'm sure it's part of the reason why testers were made out of an XLR barrel and a multi-colored LED. When connected to a 24V source it glows to tell you which way the pin were wired. Clever invention, to bad they are sometimes necessary.

I think it's a brilliant approach. Like he said, change the still camera opening so it can't accept Cine PL. Perhaps even color coordinate (some red or blue anodized piece on both still camera and lens mount) to further avoid mix-ups.

Let's see how it pans out.

Also, perhaps offer a discount for ordering loads of the still lens mounts.

Nice.. Will wait

Great idea! I like the concept of being able to use the lenses interchangeably and not have to swap mounts at an affordable price. That is huge. I also understand others concerns about being to close to the sensor and scratching it. It will be interesting to see what is developed.

Keep up the good work All Star!

Okay, I think I understand what's happening here. He's made the mount shorter to accept still lenses so they will be the right distance. However, he's also making an adapter so you just slip the adapter onto a PL mount lens and then slip that onto the mount so you can quickly switch from from still lenses to PL mount lenses.

Glad to see someone finally doing this- and Allstar makes great gear. The big question will be Red's approval. Many people do not want to void their upgrade path(s).

I totally agree Raul, on all counts. I seem to recall the ET mount was problematic in terms of Red warranty because it removed the Red back focus adjustment and I'm also not sure how it dealt with the iPin connector. If Allstar can do what he says without any of that, I can't see Red blocking him.

There seems to be a bit of panic about the chance people will try to mount a PL lens in the Allstar mount but surely there has to be a certain amount of common sense here. I mean, there's nothing to stop some knucklehead trying to mount a C Mount lens on the current PL mount - or a B4 zoom. That would do some damage to the sensor I'm sure but nobody would blame the PL mount for it. I think it would be a shame if Allstar's universal mount couldn't accommodate PL lenses too.

The Birger mount comes with a duty of care statement the user must sign and agree to. I see no reason Allstar couldn't do similar. "By signing this I agree that if I'm stoopid enough to mount the wrong lens on the wrong mount, I'll smack myself upside the head and not blame the manufacturer". Maybe a lawyer could clean it up for me but you get my drift.:sifone:

Don`t worry Shane, you have no chance to put PL lense into Allstar mount directly, and to damage the sensor. The iPin connector will be stored in the ditch, like assmeble RED Nikon mount. You don`t have to remove the back focus adjustment, just screw out 8 screws and remove the RED PL mount. I`ll try to talk with RED about the warranty issue when I finish it.

The new design looks really good. Any chance of incorporating an Iris control for digital Nikon lenses like the Underdahl and Optitek mounts?

Brilliant- it looks like you've made some nice changes / updates to the mount.

I'm looking forward to seeing some footage shot with both the PL glass and teh SLR glass. Make sure to include some footage of the SLR glass focused to infinity.

Allstar, this makes more sense. Thanks for listening. Just trying to keep the future from being confusing. We are all doing things now that will affect the future and they need to be done as best as we can possibly do. That is the reason for this forum and that is what Red does as well.

Thanks Larry, Ryan and Steve, your suggestions make the product better. I`ll try to make iris ring on nikon G lense.
There is the test video: http://www.vimeo.com/6047700
One is recorded by RED, the other is a record of the marks on lense. The distance from target to camera is 6.3ft, I focused it by LCD, instead of reading the marks. It shows you while changing 3 kinds of lense, you don`t have to swap camera mount and abject back-focus. I`ll redesign PL adapter, I want it stay at Allstar mount when changing another PL lense, and lock/release more easily.
I have proclaimed before, about $200-300 For camera mount, $100-150 For F, CY adapter, but it`s not a fixed price, depend on the final design.

thanks everyone, please give me more suggestion.:patriot:
