  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

All your glass is obsolete

For some reason I keep thinking the thread title is for a video game...

Anyhow,

The RED lenses I have a feeling will be like that red electronic lens that was on the projector - looked compact, not sure about weight but hey its RED and electronic...

So if anything its not long till we see the entire prime line with electronic abilities...probably a debut with the new RED Mote Pro

I mean its cool tech, flat lenses - but probably still years off from being used in cinema lenses

Though imagine a whole new MP edition with that tech and Leica's with them...

They are talking primarly telecom applications currently (think fiber), and the descriptions I've read here and elsewhere seem to indicate pretty narrow bandwidth... it would be interesting to see if they can design versions that pass the entire visible spectrum...

I wish the RED would just break the bank on lenses, and make the lightest, and fastest lenses around... Think... Master, Ultra Primes. That's what I want from RED lenses, and I believe most of us would pay top dollar for them.

What do you mean by "top dollar"? The Leica cine primes are exactly what you describe, but I doubt many Red owners could afford the true top dollar required.

Julio, I had no idea that the Leica lenses were so boss... I mean yeah I have heard about them, the same as anyone I guess, but I didn't know that they were that fast and sharp and light, and expensive...

master/ ultra primes? they are called zeiss superspeeds mkIII

I bet per ounce, cine lenses are much more expensive than gold, LOL!

The lightest Leica C lens weighs about 3.5 pounds, and the cost per lens is about 22250, which is under $400 an ounce. Gold price is over 4 times that.

I know the little Leica Noctilux lens, I recently purchased, at 1.5 lbs is pretty close the cost of gold. :-)

Not a problem! All they have to do is etch a bayer pattern on to the "lens". ;-)

Beyond color, isn't there an emotional component to the 'optical aberrations' of conventional lens technology? We pick a 50mm over a 12mm (or vice versa) for a reason. It's not the fidelity of the image to reality, it's the fidelity of the image to the story beat (or style or design or any other of a thousand guiding lights). We talk a lot about sensors but they're not nearly as determinative of your look and feel as your lenses and your color workflow IMHO.

(Which is not to say this is not a cool thing. It is a cool thing. And you're all cool people. Especially you.)

Great find!

They say there will be a polychromatic lens.
But the question is : will the lens be limited by the "nannoantenna" numbers and have poor rendition?

Rendition not only in lines per mm but also in colors. Funny to think that we will have 8bit / 10bit.... lenses.
