  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

All Out of 1TB MINI-MAGs?

Hey Scot....OPEN your eyes and get over the stereotypes, that is not a NIGERIAN Product, its a UK product made out of the Britain...

I do not stereotype, but....there are enormous numbers of scams on stupid Americans that are perpetrated out of Nigeria. That's a fact. You may well be a fine bloke, but you are promoting a product here (regardless of where it is purportedly made) that makes some people nervous. YMMV.

My theory is they are upgrading the mini mags to handle more data, faster, for 8k and above cameras.

By selling out of stock there is the possibility of offering a trade-in of current mini mags to get a faster, more robust mag. Then they can sell the trade-ins as battle tested to those who continue to use cameras that do not require the more robust media.

Just to be clear, this is merely grist for the rumor mill.

For the record, I would never, ever, ever consider buying media from anyone but Red no matter what. It is the most critical element of the system and there is no backup media. That being said, this website is very suspicious. There is no price quoted, just asking for a deposit and some of the wording is awkward making me wonder if this really does come from Britain as it says. Also a lot of language about how it does not infringe on any IP from Red. This is not like buying some hardware attachment that screws on -- beware! Even the way it was introduced in this thread is kind of unusual in my opinion.
Yes, Red makes a profit on media and they deserve it!

This is what I think (hope) as well.

I have three, two of which are the black colored case that I will consider selling just in case I'm right about the release of a more robust 8k+ mag later on.

I really would like to see Red releasing Mags with USB-Ports as well, that would be pretty useful!

That company doesn't make anything. It's one guy operating out of a registered mail address that dozens of businesses use. The owner - under the name of his company that has only existed for a few months - claims to be developing a digital cinema camera, designing prime lenses, manufacturing camera media (under the JinniMag brand), and a few other things. He hasn't done anything apart from a single "demo" vid that may or may not be legit. Nobody has touched his "product" outside of himself and his son because he hasn't ordered anything from whomever is putting together the media. Several months ago, right before this company popped up, someone in Austria did a tear-down of a REDMAG and put their own together, using the shell and an adapter. Surprisingly, it worked in the camera, though not as well as a genuine REDMAG. Recording rates were limited and certain features were locked out. The guy behind JinniMag likely came across the information, as it was posted online, and decided to get in on that racket.

I don't think Red will ever sell used media. There is the risk that some files could be "recovered" from the used media unless very securely erased. Their lawyers would probably advise not to take the risk.

Surely they have the capability to do a military wipe... but my experience with that had to do with HDDs, so maybe you are right.

(It's a rumor Curran... you are screwing up my rumor by debunking it so early! '-)

Isn't a military wipe where you use just one piece of toilet paper at the end to clean your hand?

I think you just rub some sand on your hand... but remember to do it AFTER you wipe and not before.

Difference is between SSD's and hard drives.
Confirming;
There is no approved method to securely sanitize data on SSD's.
Requires destruction.

SO!!! As I suspected. Those clever people at RED were working on not only a better solution, but a cheaper one as well.

The good news is even though the prior-gen drive was 512GB, we were able to preserve nearly the same usable space for you guys on the 480GB. For the 960GB, not quite the same but close.

Also, with more people leaning to larger capacity with HELIUM introduction, we passed those larger quantity discounts along to you. Resulting in more credit-card friendly pricing for both the 480GB and 960GB compared to previous versions, saving $600 and $950 per card, respectively…. Heck, we even managed to drop the 240GB by $150.

Fantastic news, really super psyched....Gonna be calling my bombardiers tomorrow....

Brent, are the new ones faster? People gonna get lower compression using them over the older 1tb mini-mag red model?

Good question. We did a soft release of new firmware today (v6.3.75) and Ops Guides that includes support for these new MINI-MAGs. Check there for details...
