Hey, so in prepping our camera for Gumball tomorrow, i realized that NONE of the audio in's work. I have just finished going through each input, turning it on, recording a test, and then on to the next port with the same results. Tested 2 different mic's on all 4 ports, 48v enabled, disabled, mic channel enabled and disabled, with no result. Is there something I am missing?

Doesn't sound right to me (forgive the pun).

Phantom power has issues so try a dynamic mic. Switch just channel 1 on and see if you get levels when you exit to the main screen. That should work, if it doesn't then I'd get out the voltmeter and make sure your miniXLR cable isn't bad. It is possible there's a bad sound board. You might need to plan on an external audio recorder or getting audio on another camera.

what firmware version are you on?

I just updated to Build 16 3.2.5. I've tried checking my audio via headphone (but i figured that proally wouldn't work, and it doesn't, lol) And that's headphones during recording, during on camera playback. Then I brought the clips into FCP using log n transfer, no dice. Then I tried just playing the smaller quicktimes, same thing no audio. Again, this was done for all 4 audio ports (all individually activated then all activated as a whole) with both a shotgun mic (phantom power) then after reading about hte problems with phantom power, i switched over to a dynamic mic we use for scratch tracks. THEN i tried out our wireless mics, which registered audio coming across, but no transfer to the RED. That being said, anyone, ideas? I'm a HUGE gearhead and for me, even tho nothing would be more amazing than a 2k slow-mo of bugatti or lamborghini punching it, it's just nothing without the audio of that engine...Plus nothing gets my heart goin more than a 15+ psi turbo feeding a well tuned engine:blush:
ANYWAYS...a question i didnt post before, is there a way to display the audio waveform? I've spend a good 30 mins going through the printout I have as well as the menu's looking for a way to turn it on, but to no use...

I've never seen a waveform on camera. I can monitor audio via headphones on tracks 1 and 2 for sure. I see the levels and hear a monitor and I get audio during playback.

@ANYONE: I have some little 16 ohm earbuds that get WARM if I try to monitor with them. Anyone know what's being sent through the earphone out that could cause that - and how I can fix it?

It would be best to use some higher impedance headphones.

I have made a test with a K6 Sennheiser today, and I saw the waveform on the right down angle of the LCD. But I had no audio on the headphone plug and I have no media to record, so I don't know what happen on FCP.

First make sure that audio is enabled in the video menu.
Second you have to see volume level horizontal indicator bars in the right lower corner of the LCD.
If you don't see the horizontal green audio bars then turn up the sensitivity to 30db in the audio menu.
At minimum you should see the empty horizontal bar-graph place holder there.
There will be as many place-holders as many mikes you did enable.
So enable all and then disable one and see if there is a difference in appearance of the bargraph placeholders. When you enable phantom power you should see the small yellow vertical little line on the left side of the bargraph place-holder. Enable/disable phantom power and see if this little vertical yellow dashes showup there.

When you plug the headphones you should hear the mike, don’t even go in to recording if you do not have audio in your headphones.
To prevent headphones from warming up your ear you can use the cable with 47uF capacitor in series on the center wire of the headphone connector or just use 100 ohm headphones.

You must have the version of the audio board made for Canada where the headphones interface do have ear heating support, so your ears stay warm even in the freezing could up there.

RED has a lot of hidden undocumented features requested by beta-testers and implemented by RED, that make your life easy when shooting. I am still discovering. Did you hear about radio-button feature on RED yet?

The RED doesn't record audio when you are acquiring slow motion footage.

Audio is disabled when doing Varispeed. Same with HVX200. It's a good feature it's saved my from forgetting to switch from slomo to regular speed and the sound man put a halt to the shooting....

Your regular speed won't synch with the slomo anyways so just record seperately.

Thanks to all who responded (a reason why I heart this forum:blush:) So it turns out:

If you use any of the evf or lcd assists (video->viewfinder->Meters->assists) then you will not be able to see you audio channels.

Also, don't take it for fact if your personally testing the audio, and despite having a full over ear set of headphones, you will most likely will not be able to hear your own voice thru them....:pinch: I'm an idiot, thanks again to everyone for all the help!

Are you trying to test audio with the frame rate set higher than your project frame rate? Audio is disabled in Variframe rate. Try using the mics at your project frame rate.
EDIT: I see that this has been asked and answered. I have never had a problem using a variety of headphones however. Try using a second record system or camera set at project rate for recording audio and it can be tweaked in post for the framerate.
