  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

And this picture below it says that Alexa is actually more in competition with Sony F35 and Panavision Genesis than it's with a RED.

Alexa with a big s.two HD-SDI recorder on board.

Basically ARRI's wish is to sell as much ALEXAs as possible and the RED ONE sold numbers were possible sort of "inspiration".

Also Alexa can't be comparable with Epic because of many things like a resolution, frame rates, size, weight, modularity, price, etc,...

I just put complete of all my RED wine safely in a cellar.

White and some of sweet wine is in a fridge.

Evian a water from French Alps cooled in a fridge is the best drink at the moment.

TOO HOT IN VIENNA these days...

Tomorrow I'm in Salzburg and its Alps around...
 
Even though he made both these videos, all biases aside, I think the pro-Epic video had far stronger arguments for getting the Epic. The pro-Alexa version seemed weak in comparison.

The first one was funny. The Alexa version was sort of "meh". It kept nagging about how Alexa exists and Epic does not as the only argument...which just serves to point out how Epic is just in another league entirely.
 
Well, if you want to get that literal, bears don't talk ;).

I was at VER the other day and heard that NCIS-LA has been shooting with Alexas for a week.

There is a feature that Roland Emerich shot in Germany in the spring in post and it looks amazing, and Bob Richardson, BSC, ASC is shooting a 3D feature directed by Scorcese with PACE, so Alexa appears to be working in production.

ARRI has been at this for awhile, dont count them out because you only know about what RED is doing.

Mr Jannard did cause a revolution with Red One, but the game has changed since those days. When Epic comes to market it will have to prove itself also among professionals. Lets just see.

In the meantime how about some generosity of spirit. There is plenty of work and plenty of room for many players.

I like that I can use all these tools. I hope to get a look at an Alexa, if I can get Michael Brevin on the phone, but I also hope to test with Epic when it finally arrives. Red One was a disappointment to me but the MX is nice, kinda like a v 1.0 IMHO.

I'm new here as well. However, I haven't seen any post by Sanjin that would make him appear as a "crazy uncle". In fact quite the opposite, I find his posts quite insightful/intelligent. Ha, well most of his posts(no offense Sanjin).

I don't know is this newbie E.D. is a real person or he is sort of a crazy uncle, an alien or an asteroid sent by A*** ?

Are these pretty expensive obsolete elephant recorder and camera a system you're talking about?

Mr Jukic, I was teasing, hope you take no offense, its all in good fun (i hope). Needling fellow cinematographers is usually okay here in the US but not sure of Austrian sensibilities.

Regarding your "analysis" of the picture of the Arri camera in a production environment, there are many big shows that would consider this tiny compared to Genesis.

I think you can just use the Pro Res 444 inside if you want small and streamline.

The shot you show looks like it was from the ARRI World Cup movie that Stargate did with fellow DP Dana Chritiansen. I think the S.Two was being tested out for uncompressed 444. I dont mean to ruffle feathers just have lively interchange.

I would give Mr Brevin a joking hard time too, on his forum, or here if he ever comes back :-)

you are coming pretty late on any of our Alexa "analyzing", "bashing" and "joking" here with your obsolete observations that tried to "defend" Alexa.

Probably you didn't get the point that my main "complaint" about Alexa is that Arri (probably with Mr. Bravin) entered here to advertise Alexa as one great "replacement" of RED ONE, later RED MX that's actually is nonsense and is not true.

I do not want to repeat again all the arguments why RED1 MX is better system but will tell you that Alexa is still far away from wider use in feature productions as for example is Genesis.

Just have a look at LOVE RANCH trailers that's one of the latest features shot on Genesis.

Also not to forget to add SOCIAL NETWORK that shot on RED1 MX.

Sanjin, I would suggest a warmer welcome to new Reduser members. No need to send people away with a bad taste in their mouth about this community. Whether you agree with his assessments or not, I think it's only fair to give him the benefit of the doubt and express his views.

Alexa will have a place. It's going to shoot movies, TV shows, 3D Projects, music videos, etc. A lot of industry professionals have the means to test and compare cameras and judge the appropriateness of that system for their needs. RED M-X and Epic will be fine. Plenty of shows already using RED cams and will continue to do so. Having a healthy discussion about these cameras should be fine as long as it doesn't become exclusively about a particular camera not made by RED, in which case, maybe a different forum is better suited for it. But in general, I'd rather see DPs showing up and engaging in interesting discussion rather than sending them away wondering what the heck just happened.

Let's try to keep it positive.
 
I think the ProRes stuff will attract more cinema schools than the Redcode RAW.

For example, mine !
We don't have enough horse power for using RAW in real time, and not enough time to wait a lot of transcoding. Even if I am a STRONG RED defender in my school (some wall me the Red Boy....lol) I can understand that. PLUS, we are an official Apple Formation Center so ProRes makes sense.

As far as I know, as of today, they won't rent any RED Cams but are thinking about the Alexa. (and they don't care about how better is a RAW format if we can have a ProRes 4444.... :/)

Oh and, as many said, the Arri Brand on the camera is considered attractive to the school's administration team as we always rent Arri cams.

I just hope I'll have anyway to get the money for a Scarlet( fixed or not) so I can use it by myself (because, if they don't have to rent any camera having me owning one, they would let us deal with Raw... You know, money rules everything...:sifone:)
