  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Alexa, REDMX, 35, F3, Canon D1 and 16 side by side on vimeo

I found this one interesting, too.

Haven't watched it all, but curious if I manage to nail which is which.

Feel pretty safe, so far, though...

OK...

I nailed them all, allmost.

I mixed up the Alexa and the 1D. Both because of funky motion.

The grade was a bit harsh, and it wasn't lit for each cam to excell. but I still found it interesting.

The Vimeo compression is quite an issue, too...

very nice.

gunleik, i think they used all available lighting, which is fair for the test... but obviously you would light based on the format you're shooting, and probably get a pretty decent end result out of any of these formats for an online stream like this. beyond that is a different discussion.

also agreed.

this was a cool project though, never seen anything done like that... probably a learning experience!

i wonder if it would be cool to do a film competition/festival type thing, where everyone starts with the same script/shotlist or something, and then shoots it... that would be kind of fun in some ways, just something short and simple. it would be cool to see different people's takes, and different actors/locations/styles/etc

Just as an explanaition ( I know you know, Paul...)

The highlight tolerance on these cameras differ quite a bit, and I would have ND'd to protect the highlights, as you usually can dig a lot out in the bottom on all of these cams (except the 1D...)

OTOH the grade was nice, but quite crushy. That's why I didn't think too much about the dynamic differences between Alexa and 1D... I guess... Maybe Alexa was shot @ 709,, too...

So I was left with funky motion as the guideline (given the not so insignificant Vimeo compression)

The cool thing, (methinks) is that the F3 is really a nice little and very useable cam.
For a guy working in a relatively big organisation with lots of different camera needs, that is actually good news...

Cheers!

good observations. i felt kind of the same way about the grade and the lack of highlight protection. didn't pay much attention to the motion i guess. all those cameras have their place, and that's great. i love me some options for dinner. annnd i'm going to bed. somebody pick up that festival idea and we'll do it.

Yeah, I had them all, except a little switch of 16mm and 1D. I almost switch Alexa and Red, but the red skin tone was recognizable on some shot. This is by far the best comparison I have seen. It must have been hell to organize this

Great comparison. I got all of them except I wasn't sure between the R1 and Alexa (not enough resolution on Vimeo to really tell). I was least impressed with the F3, I had a little trouble telling it apart from the 1D.
