So I was testing out an idea that I had today and I really like the results I'm getting so far. I really like the way the ALEXA processes colors and so I went into Davinci and applied the (ARRI ALEXA logC to Rec 709) LUT to my R3d's in Red log film mode. Honestly, The results are pretty amazing compared to red color 3. You be the judge. Any problems you see with doing this? I don't... The pics you see are 3 versions. The Alexa has no color manipulation or contrast at all. Just Straight LUT from Log. The same goes for the second pic except its in red color 3 form. The 3rd is red color 3 with contrast and a little sat bump. I still think the first is IMHO the best looking. :)

One and three are pretty darn close in terms of matching.

i think those canned LUTS are more preset for ARRI log, which is a different starting point than REDlog, they are not the same thing in terms of what is being input into the LUT, I'd like to see a set of LUTS tuned to REDlog film, which is a different starting point.

Thanks for your input David! No offense though but, so! If it looks good, I'm happy. Of course I'm aware this is unconventional and these aren't "supposed" to be used with each other because the science is different... but it looks better so who cares. I don't see any problems with color. I've tested it with over 20 shots and each one comes out great! There are moments where it's a little too saturated but then you just bring it down.

I think this is one of the more subtle ways Red could fight the whole "Arri color is better" thing. Everyone ought to see a Red LUT when they look for one in Resolve. And it ought to be very, very good. It just kinda iritates me not to see it there.

BTW - Nick Shaw produced a pretty good set of LUTs to get you from RLF to RG3.

we need red LUTs in resolve, and we need Arri LUTs in Redcine lmfao (but name it something else maybe)!

i hope they don't lose my order for this lmfao! i kid i kid!

There are LUTs in Resolve that work with Redlogfilm, the drop-down Film LUT for Rec709, both Fuji and Kodak options. It's the one below the drop-down option for the Arri LUT, but you have to adjust your R3D settings for redlogfilm first. Not only that, you can output the film LUTs for Kodak and Fuji from Resolve and import them into Adobe PP and AE.

?

Alexa colors and Alexa logC to Rec 709 LUT are two different things.

The Alexa has no color manipulation or contrast at all. Just Straight LUT from Log.

Yes, because that LUT (not "Alexa") does the saturation and contrast.

The title of this thread is very misleading.

In my opinion, the first still above looks a littttttle over-saturated. Maybe it's just me. Not a huge issue; tone whatever Saturation slider that you're using down a notch, and it's fixed.

In terms of how things are "supposed" to work, I've heard it said in a few different ways, from a few different very good colorists: what works is what looks right. I even asked one, point blank, when I was first learning Resolve "How do you know when an image is done?"

"....When it looks right." It wasn't a condescending or sarcastic response. It was just matter of fact, You're done when it's Right.

So, if you like what the Arri LogC to Rec709 LUT does, then by all means.

One other thing that I'll point out, is that Rec2020 is hot on Rec709's heels. I believe Rec2020 is the standard for UHD screens, and it has a wider gamut (much like 709 is the standard for HD screens, and has a wider gamut than 601, which was the standard for SD screens). Meaning, if you get in the habit of using any 709 LUT, your content may not look as well as that which is designed for 2020, all else being equal, when it comes to UHD displays. Just something to keep in the back of your mind as the future comes barreling towards us.

I have routinely matched Arri and Red in the same scene and never had a problem, just using eyes and fingers. Matching to toy cameras like the Canon 5D is a much bigger problem. (I'm not personally a fan of the Blackmagic camera, either, but that was a while back and maybe they're better now.)
