RED #804 along with all equipment has been stolen in NYC!. Please keep a look out!!

Wow.. From NYC?
Hey Spencer,
We need complete detail, we need to tackle this. who rent it, what production Company, location, what project, how this happened etc etc....

Oh, I didn't see your post Peter! But I can guess you are talking about a key! Good one man... though being able to get it back would still be a priority for the owners so some sort of Lo-Jack would also be a good thing to have and I imagine it might be a possibility.

great idea though, practically free to implement and a nice touch, at least those f'ing-SOBs won't be able to use the camera

how about an expoding charge that released some sort of nerve gas that makes you bleed internally, slowly, and as painfully as possible

Great. Another Red stolen.

And another bare-bones post containing little more than the serial number and no details about how the theft occurred.

I just don't get it; if my camera were stolen, I would be all over the forums with as much detail as I could possible post.

The posts on the Boston rental theft still lack important information and the thread has been hijacked (well meaning and possibly valuable suggestions) into a thread about security schemes within the camera.

So what's the deal with this one? Another bogus rental? Truck break-in? What?

Best regards,

Leo

Can you give more details as to the people who rented/stole the package. Maybe there are similarities, might be the same people.
On a personal note, this crap really pisses me off. I hope you get your gear back!

I honestly can't see these stolen R1's being worked on production here in the US. Maybe I'm wrong.

I don't think it's Jim's problem to add a lo jack system, however it would be a nice feature.

I've also been reading Peter's idea on having a key to access the camera which sounds brilliant!

Holy crap this sucks man! I was just in NYC, walking around with the Red and all my gear. Getting shady looks here in there. What happened exactly?

I have to say that I agree with you. I wish it were taken a bit more seriously and formal... but I wouldn't know since I never owned equipment this expensive.

border cops should be informed, any money someone is trying to export them,..

WTF???

Spencer Meffert posts a report that a Red, number 804, has been stolen.

No details.

No post from the owner.

No follow up post.

Very little information from the owners of the two Reds stolen in Boston. No follow up posts from the owners.

I just don't get.

Best regards,

Leo

Leo, with all due respect (I do have much respect for you and your company), there's a lot happening behind the scenes and sometimes it takes a while for all of this to be sorted out. Keep in mind, Boston Camera/Rule Broadcast is not a small shop. They didn't just show up yesterday. They are a well established rental facility that deals with a large volume of rentals. I'm sure there are reasons why this got by them. I'm sure both companies are dealing with law enforcement, FBI, insurance companies, etc. as we speak. Same probably goes for Spencer. Serial #s have been presented to Red community. In the case of Boston Camera/Film Star, the name of the company or what they posed as has been revealed. It's not like a post went up that said cameras have been stolen in Boston and no other details are available.

Now, having said that, I am in agreement with you that if this was my camera I would be on here providing as much detail as I could within the law. I would want as many eyes looking out for the camera and those responsible for taking it. I do understand your overall point.

I'm sure more details will emerge. The reality is, I believe these cameras being stolen are quickly being fenced in areas that will be hard to track them, especially by those of us in the legitimate production world. But it can't hurt to have the information available to as many people as possible. You never know where the criminals may slip up.

Spencer, I am sorry for your loss here and I hope it gets resolved as quickly as possible.

Thank you, Steve, for your post.

I'm sure they are busy, but I just can't understand why the Boston companies are so taciturn. As I've said, I'd be burning up the forums, certainly following them, to try to recover my equipment and help prevent this from happening to others .

On the number 804 camera, whose camera is it? Spencer lists another camera serial number as his, so who is the owner of 804?

The most important aspect of these events, other than the return of the equipment, is the knowledge of how these crimes operated so we can protect ourselves from them.

Good shooting (if you still have a camera!) and best regards,

Leo

Is there any ownership checking system available from RED admin
Hopefully not just the camera, but the major parts, like Lens..

Geez.. This stuff makes me really sad. Hope you guys had insurance.

I agree with Leo, we need some sort of structured response to stolen equipment, as I think the community here is one of the strong points which can help safeguard against stolen cameras or at least make the prospect of owning one in the industry circle very unattractive.

Would it be a good idea to have a structured sticky thread with "Missing Reds" ?

My fear is that if there is going to be a RED heist epedimic.. It will only lead to the jacking up of prices for these cameras and that is not good for everyone.

Guys, I appreciate the concern but lay off. I posted the alert for a friend whose camera (804) was stolen out of his vehicle in NYC.

Also stolen was all his personal effects plus a Zeiss T* 16-24mm, Schneider Cine Xenon 50mm, Schneider Cine Xenon 75mm, Kilfitt Macro 90mm.

I've been on location and internet access isn't exactly smooth and easy so again, I apologize for not communicating more frequently.

Owner of #804 is Gary Otte / Victor Zorba (Zelo Productions)

This RED was not on a job so there is no other information other than it was stolen out of a personal vehicle on a street in NYC.
